Everyone was really looking forward to the 2026 video game, 007 First Light. But recent comments from the game’s developer, IO Interactive, suggest the final game might not truly feel like a James Bond experience.
Cinematics director Martin Emborg explained to Monstervine that the new Bond films will reflect contemporary values, moving away from the style of older films in the series.

For decades, fans have enjoyed James Bond as a classic character – a charming, world-traveling spy who was known for being ruthless and unflappable. He wasn’t meant to be a hero, but his rebellious nature always made him compelling. While some argue that this traditional Bond would seem out of touch today and suggest updating him, doing so might actually ruin what made him interesting in the first place.
The Bond Fan Base
According to Emborg, James Bond has changed over the years. While the literary Bond is distinct from each actor’s interpretation, the core of the character has largely stayed consistent.
Film critic Christian Toto observed before the release of 2021’s No Time to Die that the Bond franchise has remained popular because it hasn’t radically changed over the years. He explained that Bond has had a dedicated fanbase since 1962, and it would be risky – and potentially alienating – for the studio to deliberately move away from what those fans expect.

The question of how Bond should be portrayed is just as important for the new game, 007 First Light, as it was for the last film five years ago. Criticizing longtime fans for enjoying the classic character isn’t likely to be effective. Current ideas about what’s acceptable change quickly, but Bond himself has generally stayed consistent throughout the years.
Bond game is dead.
Some game devs have learned nothing.
If you made old-school Bond, it would stand out so much you would print money.
But no, you have to reflect “Modern Values” for an audience that doesn’t exist.

Okay, let’s be real. The kind of person who’s craving a James Bond video game experience and expects that experience to align with today’s sensibilities? I think that person is pretty rare. It’s a tough balancing act, and I’m not sure there’s a huge overlap between those two desires.
When Bond Stops Being Bond
007 First Light is a new game that tells the story of James Bond’s beginnings. It’s coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC on May 27, 2026. The developers at IO Interactive say this is their biggest project yet, and they’ve pushed back the release date by two months to make sure the gameplay is as polished and refined as possible. It’s expected to be a visually stunning game.

The main concern is whether the game will stay true to the spirit of James Bond. Currently, it looks like it won’t. Because the game is officially licensed, this could mean the character is being reimagined for all future appearances, including films. Sadly, a gentler, more refined Bond – unlike the tough, complex character created by Ian Fleming – just isn’t as compelling or authentic.
Perhaps someday, James Bond will return.
