As a seasoned gamer and theatre enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming release of “Grand Theft Hamlet”. Having spent countless hours immersed in the Grand Theft Auto universe and the Bard’s most famous play, I find it utterly captivating to see these two worlds collide. It’s a testament to the power of creativity and resilience, especially during challenging times like these when theatres have had to close their doors.
Grand Theft Hamlet has landed a UK release date.
The upcoming movie, modeled after the popular “Grand Theft Auto” video game franchise, has been officially announced for a release date of December 6th in both UK and Irish cinemas.
The documentary chronicles the daily activities of theatre performers Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen, as they pass their lockdown hours by engaging in Grand Theft Auto gaming sessions.
With the pandemic prolonging and theaters still shuttered, leaving them restless, Sam and Mark spontaneously conceive a plan to present an entire performance of Hamlet within the confines of their virtual game environment.
This year, the movie, co-directed by Crane and Pinny Grylls, had its debut at the South by Southwest (SXSW) event, receiving rave reviews from critics and earning a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
This score has since dipped slightly, sitting at a still-impressive 95% from 20 reviews.
In simpler terms, Grand Theft Hamlet was praised by Deadline as one of the top films emerging from the pandemic, and Variety found it both endearing and thought-provoking.
Grand Theft Hamlet highlights that, just like stage or screen acting, gaming is expressive, healing, and playful in every aspect,” said The Hollywood Reporter. Meanwhile, IndieWire stated the movie “revives an authentic sense of peril to one of the oldest but still most thrilling English-language plays ever penned.
Elsewhere in the GTA universe, Grand Theft Auto VI is set to arrive in late 2025.
In the newest addition to the video game saga, characters Lucia and Jason embark on a lawless journey through Vice City, as hinted by the initial trailer which previews their mischievous deeds such as gardening au naturel, a crocodile menacing a corner store, and an individual running naked at a gas station.
Grand Theft Hamlet drives into cinemas on December 6.
