New Game Of Thrones Spinoff’s Ambitious 12-15 Season Plan Revealed By Showrunner

As a huge fan, I’m so excited to hear that Ira Parker, the showrunner for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is aiming for the show to actually run longer than Game of Thrones! That’s incredible news and means we’ll hopefully get to spend even more time in that world with those characters.

The first season of the Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is based on The Hedge Knight, the first of George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg stories. Peter Claffey stars as Dunk, a young knight, and Dexter Sol Ansell plays Egg, his squire, as they compete in a tournament. The show has been renewed for a second season, which will adapt the second novella, The Sworn Sword.

The original book series is a trilogy, so Esquire asked the show’s creator, Parker, about the possibility of three seasons for the TV adaptation. He revealed plans for much more, envisioning four or five seasons focusing on Egg’s childhood, then another four or five seasons set ten years later with Egg as a Prince. Finally, he’d like to conclude the story of Dunk and Egg a decade after that. Parker admits this ambitious plan would likely span the careers of himself and his fellow producers, and he’s not even sure if the studio will allow him to pursue it for that long. You can read his full comments below.

I really hope George continues writing this series. I’ve even suggested to HBO – with a bit of playful skepticism – that we could do four or five seasons focusing on a young Egg. Then, after about ten years, we could do another four or five seasons with Egg as a prince, using the actors Dexter and Peter as they age. Finally, ten years after that, we could show Egg as a grown man. The idea is to follow their lives – and mine – over a long period of time.

If Parker’s plans come to fruition, the new show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, would be significantly longer than Game of Thrones. It’s projected to outlast even House of the Dragon, which is currently planned to conclude after four seasons.

Parker admits he needs more source material to move forward with his plan, but he’s already seen 12 unpublished stories about Dunk and Egg that Martin shared with him. He described these stories as covering the characters’ entire lives, noting that while some are brief—just a paragraph or so—they offer hints about future events and the reappearances of familiar characters.

George R.R. Martin is eager to continue writing stories set in the world of Dunk and Egg, mentioning to The Hollywood Reporter that he has many more tales to tell but needs to get them written down. He’s already started working on two new novellas, one taking place in Winterfell and another in the Riverlands. Despite these side projects, Martin acknowledges that finishing The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, is his main focus. Fans have been anticipating this installment since the release of A Dance with Dragons in 2011.

Critics are loving the new HBO series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, giving it a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – higher than the first seasons of both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. While critics praise the show, audience reactions are more mixed. Still, the show got off to a strong start, with the premiere being the third most-watched debut in HBO Max history, behind only the premieres of House of the Dragon seasons one and two, suggesting a promising future.
