As a die-hard Dota 2 fan who’s been following the Crownfall saga like a hawk since its inception, I can’t help but feel the excitement coursing through my veins as we gear up for the arrival of our feathery friend, Kez! With his origins deeply rooted in the rich lore of this epic tale, it’s no wonder Valve chose him to join the battlefield.
In a short while, Kez is set to become part of the roster of characters in Dota 2. Here’s what we’ve learned about the Aviary Commander thus far.
During the peak of The International 2024, Valve unveiled their upcoming Dota 2 hero, known as Kez until now. Previously referred to as “Bird Samurai”, this character is set to make his debut on the battlefield shortly. So, who is Kez and what do we have so far about him? Keep reading for more details!

When is Kez’s release date in Dota 2?
It is anticipated that character Kez will be launched together with Crownfall Act IV, according to the official hero trailer at TI13. The expected debut of both Crownfall Act IV and Kez is around the last week of September, although it’s worth noting that Valve may introduce delays in the release date for character Kez, as they often do.
Who is Kez – the upcoming Dota 2 hero?
While not officially confirmed, it’s plausible we believe that Kez is a nickname for Kestrel, a significant character from the Crownfall saga. Kestrel’s name was initially introduced in the opening chapter when Shen (the Vengeful Spirit) and Dragonus (the Skywrath Mage) embarked on their mission to locate the Kazurai army.
As a gamer, I’m part of this world where one of the key figures is known as Kestrel. He’s the reckless, youthful spirit among us, and there’s quite a tale about how he earned that reputation. It’s said that when Kestrel was still a kid, he managed to scale the city walls, slip past the Queensguard, discover a hidden tunnel into The Cage, and free Kraw from his cell. Impressed by his courage and cunning, Kraw took him under his wing, making Kestrel the first disciple of the Kazurai order.

The Kazurai army comprises an assembly of monk-like warriors with avian characteristics, occasionally referred to as “The Flightless”. Kez is one of the original creators of this army, serving as the elected leader who expanded its ranks to overthrow Queen Imperia’s tyranny. It isn’t until Act III of Crownfall that we catch a glimpse of Kestrel, when Shen and Dragonus persuade Kez to unite forces.
Kez will play a pivotal role in the Crownfall story
In the brief, 52-second official trailer for Kez, we got a glimpse of what he has in store for us. At the start of the trailer, there’s a banner that says “Unity in Flight” – a slogan used by the Kazurai to rally their forces. This was followed by the phrase “Every revolution needs a hero,” suggesting that Kez may be the spark that ignites change, serving as an inspiration against the tyranny of Queen Imperia.
In the tale of Crownfall, Kez faced a crushing defeat in battle at the hands of an adversary. However, Act IV of Crownfall promises to show Kez’s path to redemption and revenge. This historical setting paves the way for our main character’s heroic quest as they navigate through the final act of the Crownfall chronicles. In Act IV of Crownfall, it appears that Kez will take center stage as the primary character in the closing chapter of the saga.
What are Kez’s abilities in Dota 2?
From my gaming perspective, it seems like folks are guessing that Kez might be an Agility carry character. It’s been quite some time since Valve introduced a new Agility carry, with Monkey King being the last one back in 2016. As a Flightless warrior with a samurai fighting style, I can see myself using Kez as a right-click hero that deals high damage.
Researchers have unearthed some fascinating insights into Kez’s possible talents. Two skills that might be stand-ins for the real package could also be referred to as codenames.
- Avian Assault: This ability might allow Kez to soar to a target location, showcasing his birdlike agility.
- Plumage Parry: This ability suggests that Kez can use his feathery form to block incoming attacks.
