Mark Wahlberg’s new heist film, *Play Dirty*, directed by Shane Black (known for *Kiss Kiss Bang Bang* and *Iron Man 3*), is performing well on Prime Video. As of today, it’s the number one movie on the service in the UK, and the second most-streamed title overall, behind *The Girlfriend*.
The movie centers around a professional thief seeking revenge for a botched robbery. However, his plans take an unexpected turn when he gets caught up in a conspiracy to remove a nation’s leader from power.
The film features Mark Wahlberg alongside Rosa Salazar, Tony Shalhoub, Keegan-Michael Key, LaKeith Stanfield, Chai Hansen, and Thomas Jane.

Even with a talented cast, a well-known director, and its widespread appeal, *Play Dirty* hasn’t impressed most critics or viewers.
The film received a 46% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 52 reviews, indicating a generally unfavorable reception. Viewers on IMDb gave it an average score of 5.9 out of 10, from nearly 9,000 ratings.
While not as strong as his peak years as the highest-paid screenwriter, this new film might be a good start, according to *Empire*. They note it’s not flawless and doesn’t quite recapture the magic of his best work from the 90s and 2000s, but in a crowded market of similar streaming movies, it’s refreshing to see the genuine article return.
The Guardian described *Play Dirty* as a delightfully mixed bag – a satisfyingly edgy film they’d gladly watch again. However, AVClub was less impressed, calling it a typical, cheaply-made streaming blockbuster that quickly fades into obscurity.
One IMDb user said the movie starts as a slick, exciting heist but slows down before regaining momentum. Another compared it to *Ocean’s Eleven*, but much more intense.
One viewer wondered why Mark Wahlberg seems to be taking on less important roles lately, suggesting he’s established enough in his career that he doesn’t need to. Interestingly, Robert Downey Jr. was initially considered for the part.
