Domhnall Gleeson, known from the Harry Potter films, stars in a new, quirky comedy. The movie, directed by Louis Paxton, recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and the first reviews are now available. Rotten Tomatoes has also released its score.
Currently, “The Incomer” has an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 17 reviews. This score may change as more reviews come in, but so far, critics seem to enjoy the movie’s unusual humor and original story.
A Popcornmeter score isn’t available yet, but we expect one once more people have seen the movie. Currently, there’s no release date announced for either theaters or streaming, but The Incomer is already gaining attention after winning the NEXT Innovator Award at Sundance.
Set on a faraway Scottish island, The Incomer stars Gleeson as Daniel, a clumsy land official whose arrival disrupts the lives of siblings Isla (Gayle Rankin) and Sandy (Grant O’Rourke). After their parents vanished, Isla and Sandy have grown used to living a quiet life, hunting birds and even talking to creatures from local legends.
Gregory Nussen’s review of The Incomer for ScreenRant aligns with most critics, giving it a 7 out of 10. Nussen highlights Rankin’s acting and the film’s distinctive humor, though he notes it could benefit from more emotional resonance over its full length. He writes:
“The Incomer” is a delightful and charming fairy tale for adults, and its playful, witty humor is both what makes it so appealing and its biggest weakness. Gayle Rankin gives a breakout performance in this lovely movie, but the story itself feels a bit thin. You can tell this is director Louis Paxton’s first feature film, and his unique style doesn’t quite fully come together over the longer runtime.
Many people will recognize Domhnall Gleeson from his roles in the Harry Potter films, where he played Bill Weasley in The Deathly Hallows (2010) and The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011). He’s also known for playing General Hux in Disney’s Star Wars sequels, and recently starred in The Paper, a series based on The Office.
Viewers might recognize Rankin from popular shows like Glow, Perry Mason, and House of the Dragon. O’Rourke has been in Outlander and Shetland, and The Incomer also stars Michelle Gomez, John Hannah, and Emun Elliott.
This British comedy is Paxton’s most significant feature film to date. He’s previously directed a lot of television, including popular shows like Shetland and Wreck, as well as the TV movie Calamity James (2023).
It’s still early to say how well The Incomer will do with a wider audience, but it has all the potential to become a hit comedy on streaming services, both in the UK and internationally. Reviews so far suggest critics think it’s a strong film.
