New Bungie game Marathon gets April gameplay reveal after cryptic ARG sparks hype

We’re getting an expanded look at Bungie’s new extraction shooter via a Marathon showcase.

Enthusiasm for Bungie’s latest shooter, Marathon, is skyrocketing following the launch of a community Alternate Reality Game (ARG) over the weekend, leading players to discover the release date for the game’s first gameplay trailer: April 12.

In simple terms, after several days filled with mysterious messages and puzzles to decipher, Bungie confirmed that a comprehensive reveal would occur within a week, also sharing a small sneak peek on April 6th. With this announcement and the emergence of community members who have been allowed to test the game, the upcoming extraction shooter is generating an immense amount of excitement and is quickly becoming one of the most eagerly awaited games slated for release in 2025.

Community cracks Marathon code as players get first look at new Bungie title

Last Friday, Sony and Bungie accounts were allegedly hacked, leading to a string of posts filled with references to the game Marathon and encrypted images and codes meant for the community to decode.

Previously, Bungie has introduced augmented reality games (ARGs) that were connected to events within Destiny and Destiny 2. These ARGs sometimes led to real-life treasure hunts, but this particular one guided players through an exploration of the intricate details surrounding their upcoming game, Marathon.

Towards the conclusion of the journey, a brief minute-long teaser from the Marathon’s official channel appeared. It depicted a figure running through a river on an alien planet adorned with vibrant, neon hues. Before the scene ended off-screen, the character was shot. As the figure vanished, a beam of light ascended into the sky, indicating another team was intervening from afar.

With some additional images provided by Bungie art director Joseph Cross, we get a clearer glimpse into the game Marathon. Back in May, we caught a sneak peek of its theme through the announcement trailer. Since then, various aspects about this extraction shooter have been revealed, such as its distinctive oxygen-based system that simultaneously functions as a timer for rounds, and the ability to team up with two other players.

With the gameplay trailer scheduled for next weekend and the fact that some community members have already played the game, we might not have to wait much longer before we get to play Marathon ourselves. It remains uncertain whether a full release is coming soon or if it’s just an early version of the game like an alpha or beta test, so we can only guess at this point.

In addition to those points, many others will certainly be covered during the Marathon gameplay unveiling and demonstration scheduled for April 12 at 10am Pacific Daylight Time. Here are the specific times for various time zones:
