New British spy drama with Matthew Macfadyen in the works
Matthew Macfadyen is set to star in a new British spy drama, based on the works of John le Carré.
Based on Variety reports, the upcoming novel “Legacy of Spies” is set to continue the story of George Smiley, a familiar character from numerous John le Carré spy books. It’s been suggested that Succession actor Macfadyen will take on the main role in this new adventure.
The TV show will draw ideas from a variety of the author’s works, both published and unpublished. Among these are “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold,” “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” and “The Honourable Schoolboy.
At present, The Ink Factory, a production company established by John le Carré’s sons, Stephen and Simon Cornwell, is working on the development of this series. Stephen Cornwell, along with Clarissa Ingram, has written the initial drafts for the scripts, while Graham Yost serves as an executive producer.
In his upcoming part, Macfadyen is set to take on a challenging task due to the character’s rich background spanning multiple TV shows and movies.
George Smiley has been played on screen by various actors, including Gary Oldman in the 2011 film “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”, Rupert Davies in the 1965 movie “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold”, Denholm Elliott in the 1991 film “A Murder of Quality”, and Alec Guinness, who portrayed him in both the 1979 film “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and the 1982 film “Smiley’s People”.
The Factory of Ink has created several interpretations of le Carré’s literature, among them being the suspenseful British series, “The Night Manager,” featuring Tom Hiddleston as the protagonist, Jonathan Pine.
In 2016, the highly acclaimed television show premiered its first season, featuring an impressive ensemble of actors such as Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, Elizabeth Debicki, Tom Hollander, and David Harewood. This series went on to achieve massive international popularity, earning numerous accolades, including several Golden Globes and Emmys.
For the year 2024, it was announced that “The Night Manager” would continue for two more seasons. The storyline will resume eight years following the conclusion of season 1, with Tom Hiddleston expected to return in his original role.
In the United Kingdom, seasons 2 and 3 of “The Night Manager” will be aired on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Globally, these seasons can be streamed on Prime Video.
