New BBC drama with Bodyguard’s Keeley Hawes confirms release date with trailer
New BBC drama Miss Austen starring Bodyguard‘s Keeley Hawes has landed a release date and trailer.
The forthcoming show is based on a novel by Gill Hornby and presents a fresh perspective on the dynamic between Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra, who in reality destroyed numerous letters written by their famous author.
The show is set to make its debut on Sunday, February 2nd. Starting from 6am that day, you can stream all four episodes on BBC iPlayer. From the evening of that same day, the show will air weekly on BBC One.
In the short preview, we first encounter a youthful character named Jane (played by Patsy Ferran), who expresses in a written message her reluctance to part ways with her cherished sibling Cassie, stating, “I’m not prepared to say goodbye just yet.
Later, we observe Cassandra (portrayed by Hawes), when she’s informed that her renowned sibling deserves an extensive biography in order to uncover the true writer’s identity.
Later on, Cassandra is questioned whether she came across any letters penned by her sister. Her response was that she hadn’t stumbled upon even a solitary one.
In 1830, a significant number of years following Jane Austen’s demise, Cassandra makes a visit to Isabella, the niece of her late fiance, who is in danger of losing her residence due to her father’s passing.
In essence, Cassandra appears to assist Isabella, but her true intention is to uncover a secret cache of personal letters that Cassandra worries could tarnish Jane’s standing if they fall into the wrong hands. This detail is included in the synopsis, and upon finding these letters, Cassandra is emotionally moved, as she is taken back to her younger years.
We encounter Young Cassy (Synnøve Karlsen) and Jane in a flashback, as they journey through romantic entanglements, personal disagreements within families, and shattered dreams that would ultimately mold their lives and pave the way for Jane’s captivating narratives.
Through reflection on her past, Cassandra ultimately discovers a means to help Isabella navigate the route toward genuine joy.
In addition to the previously mentioned performers, this series features Phyllis Logan from Downton Abbey, Max Irons who starred in Condor, Alfred Enoch known for How to Get Away with Murder, Calam Lynch of Bridgerton, Liv Hill from The Serpent Queen, Jessica Hynes from W1A, Mirren Mack, a cast member of The Witcher: Blood Origin, and Kevin McNally, an actor from The Crown.
The series, which comes from Mayflies‘ Andrea Gibb, will mark 250 years since Jane Austen’s birth.
Miss Austen will premiere on Sunday, February 2 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
