Recent details from the Avengers: Doomsday light show indicate Marvel might choose a new actor to play Black Panther in future movies. Talk about recasting the role of T’Challa has been happening since the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022. The role was originally and memorably played by Chadwick Boseman, who sadly passed away in August 2020.
Avengers: Doomsday light show shows T’Challa’s Black Panther
The impressive Avengers: Doomsday event in Shanghai has sparked speculation among fans that the role of Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be taken over by a different actor.
The light show was featured at Disney’s 2026 Merchandise Expo. It initially displayed panels of Doctor Doom demonstrating his abilities. Set to the Avengers theme, the show heavily focused on Doom using his powers to break apart the multiverse.
After that, viewers will see the logos of the superhero teams featured in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. These teams include the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. The light show also briefly featured the mask of Black Panther.
This has led fans to speculate about T’Challa’s potential return in the film, possibly with a new actor. Others think it might just mean we’ll see characters from Wakanda in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.
Rumors about replacing Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther (T’Challa) have circulated since 2022, but Marvel previously stated these were false. In February 2025, Marvel Studios’ Nate Moore told Comicbook.com that the rumors were untrue. However, he also suggested they haven’t ruled out recasting the role at some point, explaining that they haven’t had detailed creative discussions with director Ryan Coogler yet.
I remember reading what Kevin Feige said about not recasting Chadwick Boseman in *Wakanda Forever*. He explained that it just didn’t feel right to move forward with another actor so soon after losing him – and honestly, I completely understand. It felt like the respectful thing to do, and a way to truly honor his legacy.
There’s talk that Marvel may introduce T’Challa’s son as the new Black Panther. He first appeared in a movie released in 2022.
