New ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ trailer explains the history of the Ash People as the Na’vi wage war

War is coming to Pandora — again.

20th Century Studios unveiled a new trailer for “Avatar: Fire and Ash” on Thursday. The trailer provides a fresh look at the stunning environments of James Cameron’s highly anticipated sci-fi film and hints at what the story will be about.

In the trailer, Varang, the leader of the Mangkwan Clan, declares, “This is the only pure thing in this world,” while gesturing towards a roaring fire. She explains that the fire originated from the mountain, devastated their forest, and that despite their pleas, Eywa didn’t intervene.

The latest trailer for James Cameron’s ‘Avatar 3’ reveals a new group called the Ash People, who are led by a character named Varang, portrayed by Oona Chaplin.

In the next “Avatar” movie, Jake Sully and his family will encounter a new group of Na’vi called the Ash People, who serve as antagonists. Director James Cameron recently told Empire that the leader of this group, Varang, has become tough due to the difficulties her people have endured, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to protect them, even if it means making morally questionable choices.

The new trailer for “Fire and Ash” reveals Varang teaming up with Quaritch (Stephen Lang). She captures Spider (Jack Champion) and then leads an assault on other Na’vi clans, including the Wind Traders – a group who travel by air in ships pulled by giant, jellyfish-like animals.

Although Varang and her clan are presented as enemies in “Fire and Ash,” they aren’t simply villains. According to Chaplin, who spoke with Empire magazine in July, the Ash Clan members are driven by past trauma stemming from a major disaster.

Chaplin explained that it’s tempting to see her as a villain, but she’s truly a hero to her people. She rescued them from a life of suffering, hunger, and poverty.

The movie will also bring back familiar faces like Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana, as well as Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), Tuktirey (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss), Tonowari (Cliff Curtis), and Ronal (Kate Winslet).

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” will hit theaters Dec. 19.
