The movie industry is starting to bounce back, and anime is playing a big part. After a slow period for new releases from major studios, “Chainsaw Man: The Movie Reze Arc” has become a surprising success. The new anime film quickly reached important box office numbers during its first few weeks.
Chainsaw Man anime movie goes past $100 million worldwide
The Chainsaw Man movie, a collaboration between Sony and Crunchyroll, has now made over $100 million worldwide. It earned approximately $17.2 million in its first weekend in the United States, according to Deadline.
The new anime movie debuted in 3,003 theaters and became the number one film in North America. It earned $13 million over the weekend, surpassing other films like Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million), Regretting You ($12.9 million), and Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere ($9.1 million). According to Deadline, the movie has now made $108 million worldwide, with around 40% of that total coming from its release in Japan.
The film became only the ninth anime movie to debut with over $10 million in North American ticket sales. A large portion of the weekend’s earnings – more than 60% – came from showings in premium formats like IMAX and 3D. The movie’s marketing began at Anime Expo Los Angeles in July and continued with events at New York Comic Con. Exclusive clips, previews for online personalities, and live streams on Crunchyroll helped the film reach audiences in 65 countries.
The ‘Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc’ film is performing similarly to ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Infinity Castle,’ which was a major success for Sony and Crunchyroll, earning about $666 million worldwide. Both films demonstrate the increasing popularity and financial impact of anime in global cinemas.
Chainsaw Man is an action series based on a manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto. It centers around Denji, a demon hunter who fuses with his companion, Pochita, gaining the power to transform parts of his body into chainsaws. He then battles demons to stay alive. The series was animated by MAPPA and directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara.
It currently holds a 96% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore from audiences.
