New action thriller G20 becomes streaming hit despite 54% Rotten Tomatoes rating

Amazon Prime Video’s gripping new thriller, titled “G20“, featuring Viola Davis, has soared to be the most-viewed film on their streaming platform.

In this movie, directed by Patricia Riggen, the star from “How to Get Away with Murder” portrays U.S. President Danielle Sutton. When terrorists attack a G20 summit, she employs her military background to thwart their siege.

Following the significant surge in the film’s popularity, I couldn’t help but express my excitement on Instagram about our success. Naturally, that’s where lead star Davis chose to celebrate this remarkable accomplishment.

Seven years of dedication and effort, and finally, it’s all worth it! The results of our tireless work have come to fruition!” she expressed in her post. “A heartfelt gratitude goes out to everyone…from the depths of my soul!!!

The movie made its debut on April 10th. It’s been getting a mix of positive and negative feedback from critics, with a current rating of 54% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 39 reviews.

The G20 has received acclaim for Davis’ portrayal, with the AV Club review commending the lead character for conveying a strong, unyielding toughness without appearing inhuman. However, the movie was criticized as being overly artificial or fake.

IndieWire’s assessment was less critical, finding enjoyment in the unique concept of the film, often compared to a combination of “Air Force One” and “Die Hard”.

The critique additionally praised Davis for her portrayal of President Sutton, describing her as a performer who is not only exceptionally talented but also carries an elegant grace, making it seem as if she’s consistently operating at her highest potential.

As I team up with Davis in this flick, Antony Starr from “The Boys” takes on the role of the primary antagonist, Edward Rutledge – a formidable adversary who once served as an Australian soldier but has since transformed into a ruthless terrorist.

Completing the ensemble are Anthony Anderson, famously known for his role in Law & Order, portraying First Gentleman Derek Sutton, while Marsai Martin and Christopher Farrar take on the roles of their children, Serena and Demetrius, respectively.

Featured prominently alongside the main cast of “The White Lotus” are Sabrina Impacciatore, Ramón Rodríguez, Douglas Hodge, MeeWha Alana Lee, and Elizabeth Marvel, along with a few other talented individuals.

G20 is available to stream on Prime Video.
