New 28 Days Later movie gets exciting update
As a die-hard fan of post-apocalyptic cinema, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming sequel to one of my all-time favorites – 28 Days Later! With a life spent navigating through the ruins of society in my mind (okay, maybe not literally), it’s always a thrill to dive back into that world. The announcement of a new trilogy, starting with 28 Years Later, has me counting down the days like a survivor tracking the sun to mark the passage of time.
The upcoming 28 Days Later sequel 28 Years Later has been given two exciting updates.
The initial movie of a planned trilogy is now completed during its production phase, as announced by producer Andrew Macdonald.
“We plan to produce an additional three films in the series, with the first one titled ’28 Years Later,’ which Alex Garland wrote and Danny Boyle directed and completed filming. He made this announcement at the Edinburgh International Film Festival as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.”
Additionally, he verified that the production of the second film is currently underway, hinting, “In fact, we’ll start, bright and early tomorrow, with part two. We’re hoping for a third part, making it a trilogy.”
Back in January of this year, it was officially announced that I’ve been eagerly anticipating – a new set of movies! Darren Aronofsky was tapped to direct the first one, while Rian Johnson returned to pen the script. Now, as production is underway, Candyman director Nia DaCosta has taken charge for the upcoming second installment.
In the follow-up installment, Cillian Murphy once again takes on his role as Jim, while a fresh set of actors will be added to the series, including Jodie Comer from “Killing Eve”, Aaron Taylor-Johnson from “Kraven the Hunter”, Ralph Fiennes from “The Menu”, and Jack O’Connell from “Back to Black”.
Back in May, Comer expressed enthusiasm about being part of the project, sharing with Total Film: “Meeting Danny [Boyle], he’s remarkably assured, confident, and innovative. As an actor, it’s thrilling to be on a set led by someone like that, and I can’t wait for the experience.”
“I recall watching the movie titled ’28 Days Later’, and it left an indelible impression on me due to its raw realism. The film wasn’t just about the typical zombie apocalypse, but rather delved deep into understanding human nature, our species, and our reactions in such extreme situations.”
The movie seemed deeply authentic emotionally, a quality that firmly grounded it for me. I experienced a similar sense of authenticity while reading the script as well.
28 Years Later is released in cinemas on June 20, 2025.
