Neve Campbell shares why she rejoined the Scream franchise for Scream VII

As a die-hard Scream fan with a lifetime of memories tied to this iconic franchise, I must say that the recent developments have me more excited than Ghostface himself! After all these years and the ups and downs we’ve gone through together, it seems like Sidney Prescott (and her on-screen counterpart Neve Campbell) is finally getting the recognition she deserves.

Ever since the unveiling of the seventh movie, there’s been lots of chatter, both positive and negative, about the Scream franchise. However, recent updates are sure to put a smile on the faces of Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott fans.

In August 2023, it was confirmed that the development of Scream VII (tentative title) was underway, with Christopher Landon set to be the director. Unfortunately, the production process faced delays due to writers and actors’ strikes. The project encountered another hurdle when its lead actress, Melissa Barrera, was let go, and one of the main cast members, Jenna Ortega, departed from the film.

After that point, numerous events unfolded. It was revealed that Guy Busick would pen the script based on a story he collaborated on with James Vanderbilt. Interestingly, Kevin Williamson, the creator of Scream, stepped in to handle directing duties from Landon. Furthermore, Neve Campbell, known as the scream queen, returned to the slasher series to reprise her character Sidney Prescott in the seventh movie. You might remember that she had left the franchise following a payment disagreement after the fifth film.

Currently, Campbell has opened up about what drew her back for “Scream 7”. While a salary agreement was reached, there’s another factor that persuaded the gifted actress to rejoin. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in July 2024, she disclosed that the seventh movie will focus on her character Sidney. According to Campbell, when she was presented with the idea of continuing her character’s tale, it was this concept that prompted her decision to join the project.

I love these movies, they are so much fun to be a part of, I’m so grateful for them, I could never have imagined being a part of a movie that would have lasted this many decades.

During the interview, Campbell shared with Smith that she hadn’t received the final script for the upcoming Scream VII yet but is expecting it soon. The filming for Scream VII is scheduled to begin in December, and at this point, only Campbell has been cast for the movie.

As a long-time fan of the “Scream” franchise, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation as rumors swirl about the potential return of Courteney Cox and Patrick Dempsey to the series. Having grown up watching these talented actors bring their characters to life on the silver screen, it would be truly nostalgic to see them reprise their roles once more.
