As a huge “Scream” fan, I was really bummed to hear Neve Campbell wasn’t returning for the sixth film. She’s such a big part of what made those movies – and the whole horror genre, honestly – so iconic, and I know it wasn’t an easy choice for her to walk away.
However, the actor firmly supports her decision, telling CBS Mornings on Tuesday that she wouldn’t have been able to live with herself if she hadn’t taken a stand on set.
Neve Campbell, best known as the star of the first “Scream” movies, didn’t participate in the sixth film because she and the producers couldn’t agree on salary.
I didn’t feel like the offer reflected my worth to the team, so I had to make a difficult decision,” Campbell explained. “I felt I brought more to the franchise than what was being offered, and I needed to act on that feeling.
Movies
Neve Campbell recently explained why she chose not to return for the latest ‘Scream’ movie.
According to Variety, the actor has rejoined the cast of “Scream 7” after agreeing to a deal worth almost $7 million.
Variety reports that the latest film in the series is predicted to earn between $45 and $50 million in North American ticket sales this weekend, potentially making it the biggest opening yet for the franchise.
The film faced a difficult path to release. While Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega initially starred as the leads, taking over from Neve Campbell, both actors later left the series in 2023. Shortly after, the director, Christopher Landon, also departed the project.
Deadline reports that the individual was removed from their position because of Instagram story reposts that were widely seen as anti-Semitic.
Barrera was let go from the seventh film in late 2023 after posting opinions on social media supporting Palestine during the Israel-Hamas conflict. Shortly after, Ortega left the project, stating she had a scheduling conflict with her work on the Netflix series “Wednesday.”
Neve Campbell has said that in “Scream 7,” her character, Sidney Prescott, is now a mother enjoying a peaceful family life. This is a significant change for the character, especially given the history of tragedy surrounding those close to her, but Sidney has made a conscious decision to move forward and not let her past control her future.
When Neve Campbell decided not to return for the latest film in 2022, her fellow actors from the original movie and many fans immediately expressed their support. Matthew Lillard, who acted alongside her, called the situation clear sexism in a tweet.
I didn’t share my experience to try and mobilize others, Campbell explained. I was simply expressing what I felt was true for me at the time, and I was really touched by the positive response and support I received.
