It’s notoriously hard to make a good sequel, and many follow-up films fail to live up to the original. That seems to be the case with Netflix’s new monster movie. Critics are sharply divided – some feel it doesn’t measure up to the first film, while others enjoy its over-the-top action and spectacle.
Rachael Harper from SciFiNow gave Troll 2 a very high rating of 4 out of 5 stars, which helped improve its Rotten Tomatoes score. Currently, the film has a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 11 reviews – a score that still sparks some debate.
Yes, “Troll 2” is sometimes a bit much, but that’s also what makes it so enjoyable. It’s a wildly fun, creative, and over-the-top movie.
Pramit Chatterjee from Digital Mafia Talkies gave the film a near-perfect 4 out of 5 stars, acknowledging some typical sequel issues—which they jokingly called “sequelitis”—but ultimately praised it as a welcome addition to the kaiju movie genre. Dais Johnston of Inverse described Troll 2 as a wildly entertaining and original monster movie with the potential to be a hit on Netflix.
Will ‘Troll 2’ Be Another Monster Hit for Netflix?

Despite the overwhelmingly negative reception of Troll 2 (as reflected by its low score on Rotten Tomatoes), film critic Phil Hoad of The Guardian compared it to a low-budget imitation film, or “mockbuster.”
Honestly, the characters felt really flat and the attempts at witty dialogue just didn’t land. While using Norse mythology for a monster movie is an interesting idea, this film felt like it was just going through the motions, and it didn’t do anything to make it stand out from all the other low-budget monster flicks out there. It just blended in.
Jonathon Wilson from Ready Steady Cut was puzzled by the latest Troll movie, admitting he wasn’t sure if the audience was meant to support the trolls. Manuel São Bento of Fandomwire described Troll 2 as watchable and sometimes fun, but felt it didn’t stand out enough from the original Troll film.
I was so excited when Troll 2 dropped on Netflix! The first Troll movie was a huge hit back in 2022 – critics loved it, giving it an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, even if audiences were a bit more split. It actually became Netflix’s most-watched non-English movie ever, which is amazing! I really enjoyed the original, and I’m hoping this sequel can live up to it. It’s great to see Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim S. Falck-Jørgensen, and Mads Sjøgård Pettersen back, along with some new faces like Sara Khorami and Jon Ketil Johnsen. It’s streaming now, and I can’t wait to see what happens!
