Netflix’s Triple Frontier Still Deserves a Sequel

Over the years, the streaming service has become known for its collection of action movies, including popular titles like The Old Guard, 6 Underground, Extraction, Red Notice, and Triple Frontier. These original films feature well-known actors and substantial production costs. J.C. Chandor’s Triple Frontier particularly shines, proving to be one of the service’s most surprisingly successful films.

As a movie fan, I really enjoyed Triple Frontier. It stars a fantastic cast – Pedro Pascal, Charlie Hunnam, Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, and Garrett Hedlund – playing former Delta Force guys who decide to pull off a heist targeting a dangerous drug lord. It’s a thrilling ride because, naturally, things don’t go as planned and they’re forced to fight for their lives. It actually had a limited theatrical release in March 2019, but most people probably saw it when it hit Netflix shortly after.

Triple Frontier Has an All-Star Cast

Triple Frontier follows five ex-Delta Force operatives who plan a heist to steal $75 million from a drug cartel. Santiago “Pope” Garcia (Oscar Isaac) learns about the potential score from an informant named Yovanna (Adria Arjona) and recruits four of his former teammates to pull off the dangerous job.

By the time the movie Triple Frontier begins, Pope’s former partners have all moved on from the military. Tom “Redfly” Davis (Ben Affleck) now works as a real estate agent, while another partner is a motivational speaker. Ironhead’s brother, Ben “Benny” Miller (Garrett Hedlund), is a professional MMA fighter, and Francisco “Catfish” Morales (Pedro Pascal) flies planes as a pilot.

Pope and his team of ex-Delta Force operatives arrive in the Colombian jungle and immediately spring into action. As the operation unfolds, it’s clear they’re not the heroes of the story. Although they fulfill their commitment to Yovanna, their main goal is to get rich, and Redfly is especially focused on the money.

Even though the characters in Redfly’s group are flawed and often act questionably, it’s surprisingly easy to find yourself hoping they succeed. The high stakes – millions of dollars are at risk – make their struggles feel very real. Pope, one of the five ex-agents, stands out because he consistently shows a strong understanding of his own and others’ emotions as he travels through South America, adding depth to his story.

Layered Themes Are Explored in Triple Frontier

Though Triple Frontier focuses on a daring robbery and its consequences, it also delves into themes of greed and the struggle to survive. The film highlights the close, brotherly connection between the former Delta Force agents, which enables them to reconnect after a long time and work together with careful planning to pull off the heist.

Despite the huge potential reward, Triple Frontier delves into how greed can affect people. Although the men initially find enough money to satisfy them, Redfly soon lets his desire for more cloud his thinking. This greed drives the plot forward and creates the conflict that unfolds in the second half of the film.

Beyond the main storylines, the narrative delves into the challenges of survival, both during and after active military service, especially in combat. As the characters escape South America, they must overcome anyone who stands in their path, effortlessly falling back into their skills as former Delta Force operatives. However, glimpses into their lives after leaving the military reveal that while they may have sought calmer existences, they haven’t necessarily found greater happiness or stability.

Is Triple Frontier Getting a Sequel?

Despite not being a huge hit when it first came out, Triple Frontier was watched enough to lead to discussions about a follow-up movie. In 2023, while promoting his film Rebel Moon, director Zack Snyder shared the most recent updates on Triple Frontier 2 in an interview with The Mary Sue.

When questioned about future projects, Hunnam mentioned he’s recently taken the lead on producing a possible sequel to Triple Frontier for Netflix. He emphasized it’s still very early stages, but he’s eager to explore the experiences of military personnel after their service, and hopes to develop that further.

Charlie Hunnam’s recent statements are positive news for fans, but the sequel is still a ways off. It’s been almost two years since he first mentioned it, and we haven’t heard much since then, so it could be a while before the next film arrives.

Nevertheless, it seems Netflix hasn’t yet ruled out a sequel.

Triple Frontier is available to stream on Netflix.
