Both KPop Demon Hunters and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse have been incredibly popular on Netflix, highlighting the streaming service’s reach and the broader trends in Hollywood. KPop Demon Hunters, released in June 2025, quickly became Netflix’s most-watched original film, racking up over 500 million views and launching a hugely successful soundtrack that broke Billboard records.
I remember when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse came out in 2018 – it was a huge hit! Everyone was talking about it, and it made almost $394 million worldwide. It even won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature! Now, KPop Demon Hunters is also a massive success, and it’s amazing to me that both movies, despite being released seven years apart, have had such a similar impact. It really feels like the entertainment industry should be paying attention to what these films are doing right.
KPop Demon Hunters & Into The Spider-Verse Are Netflix’s Top 2 Kids Movies

Currently, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and KPop Demon Hunters are the top two kids’ movies on Netflix in the U.S., according to Flix Patrol. It’s impressive that Into the Spider-Verse, released eight years ago, is performing so well, even beating out newer hits like The Bad Guys and PAW Patrol: The Movie, which are also among the top five.

Sony Animation Is Changing The Game For Animated Movies

I’ve been blown away by both KPop Demon Hunters and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and it’s amazing to see what Sony Animation is doing. They’re seriously challenging Disney and Pixar as leaders in animation! Disney and Pixar have always been known for really polished 3D animation, but honestly, it feels like they haven’t changed things up much lately, while Sony is really pushing boundaries.
Unlike some studios, Sony Animation isn’t afraid to experiment. They change their animation style for each film to best match the story. For example, KPop Demon Hunters drew inspiration from anime, Korean dramas, and music videos, which was a great fit for its focus on a pop group.
The animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stands out visually by blending 3D and 2D animation to resemble a dynamic comic book. This innovative style has been a huge success for Sony Animation. Both KPop Demon Hunters and the Spider-Verse series are currently very popular, with fans eagerly anticipating the next Spider-Verse installment, Beyond the Spider-Verse (coming in 2027), and hoping for a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters.
Disney And Pixar Should Take Bigger Swings Like Sony

With the massive success of Zootopia 2 – currently the highest-grossing film ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios, having earned over $1.5 billion globally – Disney and Pixar are in a strong financial position. However, animated Disney movies have gradually been losing some of their cultural impact to Sony Animation.
With Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, things started to change in the Best Animated Feature Oscar category, ending Disney’s seven-year winning streak. While Disney has continued to win since then, their most recent win was in 2021 with Soul.
Disney’s recent losing streak at the Oscars is expected to continue, with KPop Demon Hunters currently favored to win Best Animated Feature at the 2026 ceremony. While awards aren’t everything – Disney and Pixar have still been financially successful – there’s a noticeable decline in public buzz surrounding their films compared to previous years.
Although films like Frozen, Inside Out, and Encanto were huge hits, more recent Disney movies such as Lightyear, Strange World, Wish, Elio, and Elemental haven’t resonated with audiences in the same way. This contrasts sharply with the success of titles like KPop Demon Hunters and the Spider-Verse films on Netflix, suggesting Disney might need to take more risks and try new things to stay popular.
