Netflix’s “ridiculously entertaining” new thriller jumps right to the top of UK chart just after release

Netflix’s new thriller Hostage has become a big hit just days after its release.

In this political drama, Suranne Jones portrays a fictional British Prime Minister. A distressing event occurs when her husband is abducted, coinciding with the visit of the French President, played by Julie Delpy.

After debuting on the 21st of August, the show Hostage quickly climbed to the number one spot in the United Kingdom’s Top 10 TV series, surpassing shows like Love Is Blind: UK and Wednesday.

The five-part series has generally received high praise from critics, boasting a 82% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes following 17 reviews.

The Irish Independent commented that the show’s sheer absurdity is what makes it incredibly amusing, while iNews applauded its jaw-dropping cliffhangers, startling revelations, and a sprinkling of misleading clues to chat about with coworkers the following day.

The Guardian described the series as an engaging, captivating, and hard-to-stop tale that offers significant roles for two accomplished actresses beyond their years, portraying complex characters instead of stereotypical figures.

In simpler terms, the character “Hostage” originates from the script written by Matt Charman for the movie “Bridge of Spies”, and as reported by Digital Spy, Delpy commended Jones’s collaboration with him in their work together.

She found it incredibly motivating to observe an actor collaborate with a writer to create a series around such a topic, as she remarked.

This show takes an unusual approach by having two leading females, rather than centering around the stereotypical “woman president amidst men.” The unique dynamic is intriguing, and I believe Suranne skillfully captures and embodies this fresh energy.

Jones expressed her affection towards her co-star by saying, “I absolutely enjoy collaborating with actors who have such extensive experience. Firstly, she possesses an incredible collection of stories – many of which are too private to share – but I find myself captivated by the narratives of her life, someone like Julie, who has been in and accomplished so much.

As a gamer, I always find myself drawn to amazing, creative individuals, especially women who are making their mark in the industry as writers and directors. Their talent is truly inspiring!
