Netflix’s Record-Breaking Fantasy Hit Battles For Box Office Dominance In Slow Halloween Weekend

The movie is expected to do very well in theaters over Halloween weekend. This popular fantasy musical, about KPop stars battling demons, has already set many records since its release on Netflix on June 20th.

The movie quickly became Netflix’s most popular ever, racking up 325.1 million views in its first 91 days. Plus, several songs from the movie’s soundtrack, KPop Demon Hunters, have climbed the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Notably, “Golden” by the fictional band Huntr/x was the first song by a KPop girl group to reach the top spot.

The movie KPop Demon Hunters is coming back to cinemas after a successful weekend of sing-along showings in August, where it was the top-grossing film. According to Deadline, it will be shown in 2,890 theaters this weekend, and while it’s not expected to be number one, it’s very close to the top spot.

This weekend, “KPop Demon Hunters” is expected to earn around $6 million. While Halloween falling on a Friday might make for a slower box office, the films competing for the top spot – the romance “Regretting You” and the horror sequel “Black Phone 2” – are only predicted to make about $7 million each.

This Halloween weekend, the three movies competing for the top spot have all been released before. KPop Demon Hunters has been available for over four months, Black Phone 2 is starting its third week in theaters, and Regretting You is beginning its second.

With Halloween approaching, Black Phone 2 is likely to see a surge in viewers, as it’s currently the biggest horror film in cinemas. However, horror movies often experience a sharp drop in attendance immediately after Halloween. For example, last year’s Five Nights at Freddy’s lost a significant 76.2% of its audience over its second weekend, which fell shortly after the holiday.

If KPop Demon Hunters continues to perform as well as it did during its opening weekend, it has a good chance of becoming the number one movie again this year.

It’s unclear if the movie will still attract audiences after being available for home viewing for an extended period, but it currently has an advantage over other films. Critics have praised KPop Demon Hunters, giving it a remarkable 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is significantly higher than the 73% earned by Black Phone 2 and the 28% received by Regretting You.

Interest in KPop Demon Hunters remains strong since its release. Recently, there was a lot of news about the movie’s Halloween costumes being incredibly popular – so much so that they quickly sold out! It seems Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation underestimated just how successful the film would become.
