Netflix’s Rebel Moon Director’s Cut, new A Quiet Place, and every new movie to watch
As a cinephile who has traversed the labyrinth of cinema from the quaint town of Smallville to the bustling metropolis of Gotham City, I must say that “The People’s Joker” is a refreshing blend of humor, drama, and social commentary. The film’s unique take on the coming-of-age story, coupled with its exploration of the role of comedians as truth-tellers, makes it a compelling watch for any cinema enthusiast.
Every week on TopMob, we compile a list of the standout new additions to streaming and video-on-demand platforms, spotlighting the top and must-watch films available for your home viewing pleasure.
As a devoted movie enthusiast with a passion for horror and sci-fi films, I am beyond excited about this weekend’s entertainment lineup! Being a fan of Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn, I can hardly wait to watch “A Quiet Place: Day One” on VOD. I’ve always been fascinated by Ti West’s horror series, so I’m looking forward to diving into the third installment, “Maxxxine.”
Here’s everything new that’s available to watch this weekend!
New on Netflix
Rebel Moon director’s cut
Where to watch: Available to stream on Netflix
As a long-time fan of science fiction epics, I am thrilled about the upcoming release of Zack Snyder’s new film. With a runtime of 3 hours and 21 minutes for Chapter 1, and another 2 hours and 53 minutes for Chapter 2, it promises to be an immersive cinematic experience that will keep me on the edge of my seat.
Zack Snyder is returning with what he calls the authentic cut of his previously criticized science fiction epic, “Rebel Moon.” The story unfolds in a galaxy under the oppressive rule of the Motherworld Imperium empire, where the film centers around Kora (Sofia Boutella), a former soldier who was once loyal to the Imperium. In an effort to protect a peaceful farming colony on the moon from an impending invasion, she assembles a group of fighters.
To determine if these new versions are superior to those released last year, there’s only one method: Test them!
Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color
Where to watch: Available to stream on Netflix
Category: Kaiju Drama (2 hours and 4 minutes)
As a dedicated fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement when Godzilla Minus One, the acclaimed kaiju drama by director Takashi Yamazaki, mysteriously appeared on Netflix in June. Now, the black-and-white version of this film, initially shown only for a brief period in cinemas earlier this year, has made its way onto Netflix, available to stream from this weekend. Having had the privilege of watching both versions in theaters, I can assure you that whichever version you decide on, the movie is nothing short of extraordinary.
Tarot
Where to watch: Available to stream on Netflix
Genre: Spine-tingling Horror
In the vein of the screenwriter behind “Moonfall,” Tarot unfolds as a chilling tale about a band of companions who stumble upon an enigmatic, cursed tarot deck. Once they engage with it, the characters from the cards they’ve drawn come to life and viciously slaughter them. The group must urgently unravel the mystery surrounding this tarot deck before they meet their untimely demise, one by one. Essentially, our advice is: steer clear of eerie tarot decks in an unfamiliar mansion, if you’d like to avoid a grisly end.
Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie
Where to watch: Available to stream on Netflix
Genre: Exciting Comedic Tale
As a gaming squirrel hailing from the Lone Star State, I’m taking center stage in the latest SpongeBob flick! This time around, our subaqueous pals are breaking the surface – and guess who gets to reunite with her kin? That’s right, it’s me! But here’s the kicker: we need to work together to thwart an ill-intentioned CEO who’s got his sights set on Bikini Bottom. Let’s dive into this adventure and save our underwater home!
New on Hulu
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Where to watch: Available to stream on Hulu
As a fervent admirer of post-apocalyptic sci-fi, I’m eagerly anticipating the 2-hour, 25-minute masterpiece directed by Wes Ball. Starring Owen Teague, Freya Allan, and Kevin Durand, this film promises to be a captivating journey into a world redefined by catastrophe.
300 years after the events of Matt Reeves’ “War for the Planet of the Apes,” this new chapter in the series focuses on Noa (Owen Teague), a young ape, as he embarks on a mission to save his tribe from Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), a power-hungry ape who has distorted Caesar’s legacy to establish an empire based on war and oppression.
From our review:
From a fan’s perspective, I must admit that the narrative of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” doesn’t often rise above ordinary competence. However, what truly sets this film apart is its relentless emphasis on the apes, and it’s nothing short of astonishing how the team at Wētā FX, along with the other visual effects artists, have breathed life into these extraordinary digital characters. Each ape has been given unique body language, making them distinct and lifelike. Remarkably, they’ve managed to capture every tic and subtle expression of the human actors, transferring it flawlessly onto their virtual faces. These digital creations are some of the most soulful I’ve ever seen in a blockbuster action movie, and it’s fascinating to witness them in a film that seems quite pedestrian at times.
New on MGM Plus
Challengers

Experience the passionate tennis-centered drama by Luca Guadagnino, a film that delves into a love triangle among professionals, has sparked excitement in various circles worldwide since its April release, making it one of the standout films of the year. From our review:
As a longtime admirer of both film and character complexity, I am absolutely thrilled by the prospect of “Tashi.” This script promises a rich and multifaceted character that feels tailor-made for an actress like Zendaya, who has consistently demonstrated her ability to tackle complex roles with nuance and depth.
New on Metrograph

New to rent
Maxxxine
Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and Vudu
Genre: Horror
Run time: 1h 41m
Director: Ti West
Cast: Mia Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney
In the third part of Ti West’s trilogy of horror films set in different time periods, Mia Goth reappears as Maxine Minx, a character she played in the 2022 film “X“. Six years after escaping the harrowing events that occurred in rural Texas, Maxine is now based in Los Angeles, working as an adult film actress and erotic performer on the brink of her first major role in a horror movie. However, when a secretive stalker and a questionable private investigator start harassing her and putting those close to her in danger, Maxine must use all her wit to survive and prevail.
From our review:
In comparison to the other films in the series, Maxxxine is more intense, swift-moving, and straightforward, offering an entertaining experience for those who can handle its intentionally gruesome and thought-provoking violence. However, this installment seems to suggest that West has transitioned from imitating his former role into truly embodying it – a shift Kurt Vonnegut might describe as “becoming what one was pretending to be.” This isn’t merely a question of categorization, but rather something that impacts the narrative in a less satisfying manner.
A Quiet Place: Day One
Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and Vudu
Category: Spooky Thrills
Lupita Nyong’o takes on a role in the predecessor to 2018’s “A Quiet Place,” portraying Samira, a New York resident battling cancer who encounters the alien invasion that sweeps across Earth. Assisted by Eric (Joseph Quinn), a law student, and Henri (Djimon Hounsou), another survivor, Samira embarks on a mission to safely flee the city.
From our review:
Day One” isn’t exactly a sequel or prequel to John Krasinski’s 2018 horror movie, but rather, it’s a gripping drama that delves into the universe established by the previous films. Occasionally, you might find some intriguing details about the aliens and their echolocation abilities, but these are more like background details to focus on the human story instead. Unlike its rural counterparts, “Day One” shifts the setting to New York City and follows a narrative style similar to big-scale disaster films. Since “Cloverfield,” this might be the most thrilling Manhattan chaos we’ve seen, and it’s also an outstanding Hollywood blockbuster, although it’s quite different from what we might have expected.
The People’s Joker
Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and Vudu
Genre: Humorous Parody (1 hour and 32 minutes)
In this comical take on DC Comics, we follow the journey of Vera, a transgender woman from Smallville, who relocates to Gotham City with aspirations of making it big in stand-up comedy under the alias “Joker the Harlequin.” She teams up with her friend The Penguin (Nathan Faustyn) to create an unconventional comedy group. Their path crosses with Vera’s abusive partner Mr. J (Kane Distler), a powerful vigilante called the Batman (Phil Braun), and other challenges they must face head-on.
From our review:
The movie isn’t just a series of inside jokes about comedy, but it’s not strictly a comedy either, which is beneficial because the account of Vera/Joker’s “anti-comedy” career is the least distinctive part of the film. Discussions between Joker and the Penguin on comedians as truth-tellers are common in discussions about comedy, both in podcasts and documentaries. Uncommon, however, are first-person narratives of a coming-of-age trans experience, especially those where transition involves falling into a vat of hormones. The People’s Joker is also an earnest portrayal of Vera’s path to self-discovery, starting from her childhood as a girl struggling in a boy’s body in Smallville. It is dedicated to “mom” and Joel Schumacher.
Daddio
Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and Vudu
Genre: Drama
Run time: 1h 40m
Director: Christy Hall
Cast: Sean Penn, Dakota Johnson
You might recall the 2013 film, “Locke,” where Tom Hardy portrayed a solitary construction foreman conversing with various off-screen characters while driving on a freeway. The movie “Daddio” follows a similar pattern but has a unique twist – instead of one character, there are now two on-screen characters engaged in conversation! Dakota Johnson plays a woman who shares a ride from JFK International Airport to her Manhattan apartment with Clark, portrayed by Sean Pean. Their discussion revolves around topics like life, love, vulnerability, and more.
The Vourdalak
Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and Vudu
Genre: Spooky and magical tale
If, just like me, you’re eagerly anticipating the release of Robert Eggers’ upcoming film Nosferatu, you may want to take a bite out of this fresh supernatural horror movie directed by Adrien Beau.
Kacey Mottet Klein plays the role of Marquis Jacques Antoine Saturnin d’Urfe, a messenger from the King of France during the 18th century in Europe. He is warmly received as a guest at the residence of Gorcha, who has departed to engage the Turks in battle. However, after six days without Gorcha’s return, his family becomes worried and suspects that he might have been turned into a Vourdalak – a type of vampire known for feeding on the blood of its own kin.
