Netflix’s new true crime drama from makers of Dahmer gets release date

As a seasoned gamer who has lived through the golden age of true crime documentaries and series, I eagerly await the arrival of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” on Netflix. My fascination with the macabre and intricate narratives of real-life crimes has led me down a winding path, where the line between entertainment and education often blurs.

Netflix’s next season of anthology true crime series Monster has confirmed a release date.

In the game titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Tale,” I step into the shoes of the infamous brothers, Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted in 1996 for the tragic slaying of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez.

The streamer has officially announced that the new season will start streaming on the platform within a month, starting on September 19th.

As a gamer, I’ve just gotten wind of some exciting news! They dropped a sneak peek, a tantalizing trailer that had me on the edge of my seat. In it, these two characters, brothers by blood, strutted into their lavish Beverly Hills estates, each clutching a shotgun. The tension was thick as I watched, then… bam! Shots rang out, echoing ominously round the mansion. Can’t wait to see more!

In the upcoming season, Cooper Koch of “Power Book II: Ghost” is cast as Erik, Nicholas Alexander Chavez from “General Hospital” takes on the role of Lyle. Meanwhile, the Academy Award-winning actor Javier Bardem will depict José, and Chloë Sevigny from “American Horror Story” joins the cast as Kitty.

The narrative of “The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story” continues, following in the footsteps of creator Ryan Murphy’s initial production, “Dahmer,” which delved into the life of notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Despite achieving high viewership numbers, the series sparked controversy as relatives of Dahmer’s victims voiced their opposition to the program.

“Eric Perry, Errol Lindsey’s cousin, expressed his feelings on X (formerly Twitter) by saying, ‘I don’t tell people what to watch, but I know that true-crime media is popular. However, my family [the Isbells] are upset about this show because it repeatedly retraumatizes us. It seems unnecessary to create so many films/shows/documentaries about the same event.’ “

As a passionate viewer, I found myself caught up in another stirring debate regarding the classification of the show on Netflix under the LGBTQ category. Previously, Murphy had addressed this issue, shedding some light on it.

He shared with Variety that he believes the tag was assigned due to his active role in the project. As a gay man, many of his narratives revolve around LGBTQ themes, which he admits is self-serving. Growing up, he lacked representations he could relate to. His goal has always been to bring these stories and characters to light, uncovering hidden history.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will stream on Netflix from September 19.
