Netflix’s new One Piece anime first look shows how hard adaptation is
As a lifelong One Piece fan who has sailed through the Grand Line countless times, I am beyond thrilled to witness this monumental endeavor by Netflix and Wit Studio. The thought of a remade anime running parallel to the original is almost too good to be true!
As a gaming enthusiast, I couldn’t help but feel thrilled when Netflix dived headfirst into the world of One Piece! They’ve not only taken up the challenge of creating a live-action adaptation (with season 2 already brewing), but they’re also collaborating with Wit Studio to reimagine the beloved One Piece anime. It’s an exciting time for fans like me!
The upcoming anime titled “One Piece,” originally announced in December last year, will air simultaneously with the ongoing “One Piece” anime. This presents an exciting prospect: “One Piece” has grown from its humble beginnings as Eiichiro Oda’s first manga panels and the initial budget constraints of the original anime, into a global phenomenon. Today, “One Piece” signifies something distinct compared to its early days, and a new anime could enhance the charm of those early chapters.
Indeed, carrying such a thought comes with its own weight. The team at Wit is incredibly dedicated to making their adaptation of The One Piece as flawless as possible, as the recent sneak peek behind the scenes demonstrates. However, it’s not always simple when you’re adapting a series that has spanned 27 years and seen both the creator’s style and characters evolve. The challenge lies in encapsulating what “One Piece” represents after such a long journey. But how do they manage to convey its essence accurately?
As a dedicated fan, I’ve discovered an intriguing facet of this production: From consultations with real-world weapons and French culinary journals by our prop animators, to the meticulous 2-month effort spent by our character designer on replicating One Piece character sketches, there’s a wealth of detail. But it doesn’t stop there – our landscapes animator regularly practices Oda’s distinctive cloud techniques to capture that softness they bring to the show.
In the end, everyone is putting maximum effort into understanding and applying Oda’s teachings from One Piece, which emphasized original expression over direct reproduction. It’s fascinating to observe this process, including glimpses at how they create 3D models of the town for various perspectives, aiming to truly embody the spirit of One Piece.
One Piece stands tall in a selective realm, and it’s fascinating to get an exclusive peek behind the curtains of anime production, which isn’t usually accessible. Moreover, it’s intriguing to learn about artists’ personal connections with characters, such as their preference for those who smoke because they believe these characters often have striking poses.
“The One Piece” continues its storyline from the manga, beginning with the East Blue saga. This upcoming series will be a collaborative effort between Shueisha, Fuji Television Network, and Toei Animation Company (the same team behind the current anime series). As of now, no official release date has been announced.
