Netflix’s Monster anthology confirms third season’s true crime story

As a seasoned fan of true crime anthologies and horror movies, I can hardly contain my excitement for Ryan Murphy’s next offering, “Monster”! Having grown up with the chilling tales of Ed Gein, his macabre legacy has left an indelible mark on our collective psyche. From Buffalo Bill to Norman Bates, these characters have haunted my dreams and fueled my fascination with the darker corners of humanity.

The third season of Ryan Murphy’s true crime anthology series, “Monster,” has officially decided on which case it will focus.

The debut season of the Netflix series provoked much debate as it delved into the life of infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, whereas the second season, set to drop on the streaming service this Thursday (September 19), explores the Menéndez brothers and the killing of their parents.

Confirmed reports indicate that the third season of “Monster” will feature Charlie Hunnam portraying notorious serial killer Ed Gein, who was famously called the ‘Butcher of Plainfield’ (as per Variety).

In 1957, the gruesome acts committed by Ed Gein gained widespread recognition when authorities unearthed bodies from local cemeteries in his home town, Plainfield, Wisconsin. Upon searching his premises, they also discovered human remains.

In 1954, Ed Gein admitted to murdering Mary Hogan, and again in 1957, he confessed to the death of Bernice Worden. However, there were suspicions that he may have been responsible for additional killings.

Originally deemed incapable of facing a court trial, he eventually stood trial for the murder of Worden in 1968 and passed away in a psychiatric institution in 1984.

In a chilling twist, I’ve always found it eerie how my gaming characters seem to mirror some real-life horror figures. Characters like Buffalo Bill from “Silence of the Lambs,” Norman Bates from “Psycho,” and Leatherface from “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” all seem to share a dark connection with me, as if they were somehow inspired by Ed Gein’s chilling crimes.

The second season of the series known as “Monster,” which is also called “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story,” features Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch portraying brothers Lyle and Erik Menéndez.

In a court trial, the brother and sister were convicted of premeditated homicide, as they had killed their parents, José and Kitty Menéndez, by gunfire. In 1996, these siblings received a life sentence without the option for parole in prison.

Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny play José and Kitty, respectively.

The initial season of “Monster” delved into the life and heinous acts of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, responsible for murdering 17 young men and boys over a span of 13 years, from 1978 to 1991. Evan Peters portrayed Dahmer in this series.

Following its impressive performance and high viewership, Netflix has officially announced plans for two more seasons, focusing instead on other influential, monstrous characters who have left their mark on society.

From September 19th, you can stream the story of the Menendez brothers, titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” exclusively on Netflix. Meanwhile, if you’re interested, “Dahmer” is already available for streaming.
