Netflix’s “melodramatic” thriller with “genuinely unexpected” twist jumps to number one in UK streaming chart
I just can’t believe it! The thrilling new psychological drama on Netflix, featuring the incredible acting skills of Taraji P Henson (from Empire) and Teyana Taylor, has taken the top spot in the UK’s streaming charts. Can’t wait to dive back into this gripping series!
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to highlight that the poignant drama, “Straw,” penned, crafted, and guided by Tyler Perry, is a gripping tale. In this compelling narrative, it’s me (or rather, a character I deeply connect with) – Janiyah Wilkinson – who finds herself in a desperate situation as a mother to an ailing child named Aria. With hope dwindling, I take drastic steps to save my precious daughter.
On what turned out to be a disastrous day for Janiyah, following her termination from work and her inability to withdraw her wages without identification, she brandished a firearm at a bank teller, thereby triggering a law enforcement response aimed at halting her actions.

In this scenario, Sherri Shepherd takes on the role of the bank manager named Nicole, whereas Taylor embodies Detective Kay Raymond, a previous Army negotiator who attempts to establish a connection with Janiyah via telephone conversations.
The movie was premiered on Netflix on June 6th and quickly became one of the most-watched films on the streaming platform in the United Kingdom.
In numerous countries such as the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Ireland, Nigeria, and South Africa, Straw is currently the most popular movie on the platform right now.
As a gamer, I found Straw to be more well-received than most of Perry’s movies, like A Fall from Grace. It kept up with Perry’s characteristic melodramatic style, as numerous reviews agreed.
According to the review by Variety, “Straw” transcends Tyler Perry’s typical comedies and emotional dramas, despite its flaws, due to a unique cultural relevance that sets it apart.
While I’m deeply invested in the gaming world, it’s clear that Perry didn’t quite grasp the concepts he tackled this time. The review from The Guardian echoed this sentiment, stating: “As always, Perry delves into numerous topics, but rarely with a comprehensive understanding. Unfortunately, Black women are one such topic where his portrayal falls short yet again.
Critics highly commended the acting skills of Henson and Shepherd, calling their performances deeply moving and outstanding, which significantly enhanced the overall quality of the production.
For spectators, feedback from IMDb audiences is generally favorable, with many praising the acting performances and finding the emotional conclusion surprisingly unpredictable.
Straw is streaming on Netflix.
