Netflix’s new Danish spy drama, The Asset, is a hit! Since premiering on October 27th, the series has attracted a large audience on the streaming platform. It’s a tense and exciting show, reminiscent of Apple TV+’s Slow Horses, and follows a rookie police officer who goes undercover to infiltrate a dangerous drug operation. The series stars Clara Dessau, Maria Cordsen, and Afshin Firouzi.
Netflix recently published its list of the top 10 non-English series worldwide for the week of November 17th to 23rd. The series The Asset reached number 10 in its fourth week, attracting 1.3 million viewers for a total of 6 million hours watched.
The Asset performed very well internationally, reaching the top 10 in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Kenya, and Saudi Arabia. It originally launched at number one worldwide, topping the charts in 51 countries, before falling to number two in its second week and number seven the week after that.
Although the show’s ratings are gradually declining, it still reached a significant achievement this week, attracting a total of 20.5 million viewers and accumulating 97.1 million hours of watch time.
This is a significant achievement for a Netflix series not originally made in English. While shows like South Korea’s Squid Game and Spain’s Money Heist have been massive global successes, the most popular seasons across the entire platform have typically drawn between 58.4 million (for season 1 of Who Killed Sara?) and 265.2 million viewers (for season 1 of Squid Game).
Although the first three seasons of Squid Game were exceptionally popular, the overall numbers are much lower than Netflix’s most-watched English-language series ever. Those top shows range from 98.2 million viewers for Fool Me Once to 252.1 million for season one of Wednesday.
The Asset is performing very well when compared to other recent non-English language shows that have been popular for a similar amount of time. For example, the Brazilian crime series Rulers of Fortune briefly overtook The Asset to become the most-watched show, but its total viewership after two weeks is only 14.3 million.
The Asset has performed even better than Physical: Asia, the first spin-off of the popular Netflix show Physical: 100. While Physical: Asia has quietly gained a following, it’s reached 16 million viewers – a lower number than The Asset during the same period.
