Netflix’s Greta Gerwig ‘Narnia’ movie to exclusively premiere on Imax screens

The upcoming “Narnia” film from Netflix is set to have a unique release plan – it will only be available initially in IMAX cinemas globally for a fortnight, as per the confirmation made by Netflix on Friday.

The upcoming movie directed by Greta Gerwig is set to be screened on between 1,000 and 1,800 IMAX theaters, as per an unnamed source privy to the agreement. This cinematic release will take place on Thanksgiving Day 2026, followed by its debut on Netflix on Christmas Day.

This transaction represents a fine line that Netflix must walk, as its core strategy revolves around expanding its streaming subscriber base. While Netflix has previously released films in theaters to become eligible for awards, it usually prioritizes swiftly delivering those movies on its streaming platform to cater to its vast audience of millions.

Instead, certain Hollywood artists express a strong preference for their projects to be showcased in cinemas. A spokesperson for Gerwig was yet to provide a comment regarding the query.

As a proponent, I’m excited to share that Netflix and IMAX might be collaborating on bringing Greta Gerwig’s “The Chronicles of Narnia” to cinemas. This potential partnership hints at an evolution in Netflix’s approach towards movies, as it suggests a shift from exclusive streaming content to a hybrid model, combining the best aspects of both cinema and streaming experiences for viewers like me.

For the very first time, Imax has secured a deal for a theatrical release of a Netflix-produced narrative feature film. Previously, a Netflix documentary titled “Skywalkers: A Love Story” was screened in Imax theaters.

The film adapts from C.S. Lewis’s “The Chronicles of Narnia” series. It presents a grand narrative infused with religious undertones, revolving around a fantastical realm and the quartet of siblings who become its monarchs. The Narnian chronicles have achieved global sales exceeding 115 million copies.

As a fervent advocate, I firmly believe that transforming this grand tale into an IMAX experience aligns perfectly with its expansive fantasy realm and the breathtaking, visually striking cinematography promised for the film. Moreover, it’s safe to say that the movie will undoubtedly ignite immense enthusiasm among fans.

The three Narnia films, distributed by Disney and 20th Century Fox between 2005 and 2010, collectively earned approximately $537.7 million in North America, based on unadjusted figures provided by Comscore.
