The incredible success of Game of Thrones explains why Netflix aimed to replicate that popularity with a comparable show. When it premiered in 2011, Game of Thrones was a groundbreaking series, known for being realistic, intense, and innovative.
Adapting George R.R. Martin’s fantastical and gritty world for television sparked a surge in popularity for historical dramas. These shows were notable for not protecting any main characters and for realistically portraying all facets of life within their worlds.
Naturally, that success motivated other studios and streaming services to improve their own offerings and try to achieve similar results.
Marco Polo Failed To Be Netflix’s Game Of Thrones

Marco Polo is a sweeping historical drama about the famous explorer’s life. The series follows Marco Polo’s adventures and experiences in 13th-century Mongolia, offering a realistic and often intense portrayal of the period.
As a huge fan of epic shows, I remember when Game of Thrones really blew up. Netflix saw how incredibly popular it was, and they tried to create their own big hit with Marco Polo. They really invested a lot in it, hoping it would be similar in scope and appeal. Sadly, it just didn’t take off. The show kind of stalled out, and Netflix ended up canceling it after only two seasons, which was a bit of a disappointment.
Netflix Learned A Lot Of Lessons From Marco Polo’s Failure
Netflix doesn’t need to be like HBO to succeed. As the most popular streaming service, Netflix can attract a much wider audience with its expanding collection of original shows and movies, rather than focusing on a single niche.
Instead of spending a lot of money on just a few large-scale series, Netflix is now spreading its investments across many more projects. They’re particularly focused on obtaining rights to well-known franchises. The success of shows like Wednesday and Cobra Kai demonstrates that building on existing popular stories with a fresh approach can be very effective.
Netflix achieved remarkable success with shows like Squid Game, which helped them reach viewers around the world – a level of impact no one anticipated. As a result, Netflix now offers a constantly expanding range of movies and series.
Netflix invested heavily in Marco Polo, hoping it would become as popular as Game of Thrones. While that didn’t work out, it taught them valuable lessons. This ultimately led to the creation of hugely successful shows like Stranger Things. Although Marco Polo is largely forgotten now, Netflix recovered and is now more successful than ever.
