As HBO Max’s It: Welcome to Derry comes to a close, Netflix will soon release a related series. Welcome to Derry, highly anticipated for 2025, is set in the same world as the It movies directed by Andy Muschietti, but it’s a prequel, taking viewers back to 1962.
Welcome to Derry tells the story of a new group of children—including the father of Mike Hanlon—who are frightened by the terrifying, shape-shifting creature known as “It.” Meanwhile, some of the adults in Derry are also being haunted, and the military is secretly planning something shocking involving the town and the creature. The story has been well-received by critics so far.
The first season of Welcome to Derry will have eight episodes, concluding on December 14, 2025. Good news for Stephen King fans – Netflix will release a related series just two days after that!
Castle Rock Is Coming To Netflix On December 16

Netflix is constantly adding new movies and shows, and on December 16th, they’ll be adding a hidden gem: Castle Rock. This series, created by Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason, is unique among Stephen King adaptations because it doesn’t follow one particular book or story.
Unlike previous shows, Castle Rock features new characters and stories inspired by the town and universe created by Stephen King. The series only lasted two seasons, with each season telling a completely different story. The first season focused on Henry Deaver, a lawyer, and a mysterious man known only as The Kid, who had ties to Shawshank prison.
Season 2 of Castle Rock tells the origin story of Annie Wilkes (played by Lizzy Caplan) and her daughter, acting as a prequel to Misery. Though the show received good reviews and had a lot of promise, it was unfortunately canceled after two seasons, leaving some plotlines unresolved. Despite this, it remains highly recommended for fans of Stephen King.
Why Castle Rock Is A Perfect Watch After Welcome To Derry

While Castle Rock and It/ Welcome to Derry are distinct stories, they share a connected universe. Both towns, created by Stephen King, have dark and troubling pasts, and are located near each other. The first season of Castle Rock features supernatural events reminiscent of Derry, but focuses more on the characters and their emotional journeys than Welcome to Derry does.
The first season of Castle Rock features Bill Skarsgård, which will be a nice change for viewers who recently saw him play a villain in Welcome to Derry. The show expands on the world created by Stephen King without adapting any one particular book, and it’s filled with hidden references for fans to discover.
Okay, so I just finished watching Castle Rock, and while it doesn’t lean into the graphic stuff as much as Welcome to Derry did, it absolutely delivers on the atmosphere and suspense. Honestly, I think it’s a seriously underrated Stephen King adaptation – it really deserves more attention.
