Netflix has announced the launch of its live-action series, Assassin’s Creed, confirming that the Animus – a device featured in the show – is now active.
The Assassin’s Creed series is a hugely popular video game franchise, selling over 230 million copies by early 2026. These games are known for their immersive, open-world settings and action-packed adventures in historical locations. First released in 2007, the series centers around a hidden conflict between Assassins and Templars, and players use skills like parkour, stealth, and combat to complete missions.
Netflix has officially started filming its Assassin’s Creed series in Rome, Italy. The show, based on the popular video game franchise, will be set in the Roman Empire and is a collaboration between Netflix and Ubisoft.
Assassin’s Creed is a fast-paced, action-packed series about a hidden conflict between two groups: one that wants to control the future, and another that fights to protect people’s freedom. The story takes place during important moments in history, as characters struggle to decide the fate of humanity.
The series will star Lola Petticrew (known for Say Nothing), Toby Wallace (Euphoria Season 3), Zachary Hart (Slow Horses), Laura Marcus (Death by Lightning), Tanzyn Crawford (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), Nabhaan Rizwan (KAOS), and Claes Bang (Bad Sisters).
In addition to the main cast, Noomi Rapace (known for Prometheus), Ramzy Bedia (Haunted Minds), Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible — Fallout), Corrado Invernizzi (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Sandra Guldberg-Kampp (Foundation), Youssef Kerkour (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), Mirren Mack (28 Years Later: The Bone Temple), and Louis McCartney (Stranger Things: The First Shadow) will appear in recurring roles. Details about their characters haven’t been released yet.
Robert Patino, known for his work on Westworld, and David Wiener, known for Halo, will create, run, and executive produce the new series. They shared their enthusiasm for the project in a statement to Tudum.
Beyond the exciting visuals and action, this story is fundamentally about the human experience – people grappling with their place in the world, questioning who they are, and searching for meaning. It explores universal themes like power, conflict, desire, ambition, and the pursuit of justice.
At its heart, this show celebrates the importance of human connection, no matter where or when people live. It also explores what happens when those bonds are lost. We’re incredibly excited to be working with the talented teams at Ubisoft and Netflix to create a truly special experience for viewers worldwide.
A film based on the game series came out in 2016 with a star-studded cast including Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons. However, the movie wasn’t a success, earning a low 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This has made fans of Assassin’s Creed cautious about Netflix’s new adaptation.
As of today, we don’t have a confirmed release date for the new Assassin’s Creed game, but development is now officially underway, signaling the start of its public reveal.
