Netflix's animated Devil May Cry series gets first teaser and release window

As a long-time fan of the Capcom video game series, I can’t help but be ecstatic about the upcoming Netflix animated show, “Devil May Cry”. Having grown up with Dante and his red trench coat, oversized sword, and twin handguns named Ebony and Ivory, this announcement has sent my excitement levels soaring. With Adi Shankar, the creator of Netflix’s “Castlevania” series, at the helm and Studio Mir, the geniuses behind Netflix’s animated “Witcher” spinoffs, I have high hopes that this show will deliver on all fronts.

This week has been an exciting whirlwind of Netflix news! The streamer’s Geeked Week celebration unveiled a multitude of trailers and announcements. Ranging from a sneak peek at season 2 of “Wednesday” to the chilling trailer for the horror movie “Don’t Move,” and a fresh look at the horror-comedy film “It’s What’s Inside,” there’s been no shortage of anticipation-worthy content. Among these, the new teaser for “Devil May Cry” has truly amped up my enthusiasm to the max!

Derived from the extended Capcom game franchise, “Devil May Cry” is an animated production by Adi Shankar, known for Netflix’s “Castlevania” series. The story centers around a young devil slayer named Dante, who often dons a red trench coat, carries an enormous sword, and dual pistols called Ebony and Ivory. Beyond being human-devil hybrid, Dante possesses unique abilities that make him superior to the inhabitants of hell. When Dante arrives, either the denizens of darkness scatter in terror or they meet a grisly end, reduced to pieces.

If it seems a bit absurd, that’s the point; the Devil May Cry games revolve around Dante, a character who slashes devils with flair and panache, all while preserving humanity from diverse supernatural perils. The initial trailer for the Netflix series appears to have nailed those energetic vibes spot on.

Besides Shankar’s participation, what truly amps up the anticipation for this fresh Devil May Cry series is the fact that it’s being developed by Studio Mir. You might recognize their name from Netflix’s animated Witcher spin-offs, The Nightmare of the Wolf and The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. It seems Netflix has been excelling in bringing video game franchises to life through animation. With talent like Shankar and Studio Mir on board, I have high hopes that Devil May Cry will receive the quality it deserves.

Since 2018, Netflix’s “Devil May Cry” series has been under continuous development, with Shankar and his producing partner Alex Larsen dedicating every day to its creation. As Shankar shared with Tudum, their determination stems from their passion for the franchise and their ambition to create something extraordinary. Instead of merely producing another animated show, their aim is to craft one of the finest shows available on Netflix overall.

Who plays Dante in the new Devil May Cry show?

In addition to the trailer, a few more tidbits were disclosed, such as the revelation of Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante’s voice actor. Bosch is widely recognized for his role in Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, but he has amassed numerous voice acting credits over the years, including notable anime projects like Akira, Bleach, Dragon Ball, and Trigun Stampede. There’s no question that Dante is in capable hands with Bosch on board.

Not only have we received a timeline, but the highly-anticipated series “Devil May Cry” will be streaming on Netflix starting around April 2025! Be sure to jot down the date, order your favorite pizza, and gear up for some thrilling devil-slaying adventures. As Shankar would say, let’s get pumped!
