Netflix’s action sequel branded “tedious” and “disastrous” is now trending worldwide

In a more relaxed, conversational style: The second installment of “The Old Guard,” the Netflix action series that’s been labeled as both tedious and disastrous, is currently generating buzz on a global scale.

In the wake of last year’s blockbuster release, I find myself eagerly diving back into the captivating saga of Andy, portrayed by the talented Charlize Theron, and her eternal band of heroes. This time around, they’re up against a formidable partnership between a fresh menace and an age-old foe, determined to safeguard our world yet again.

On July 2nd, Netflix debuted the eagerly anticipated sequel, which has since become a success. According to FlixPatrol, it’s currently the most-watched movie globally on the streaming platform. Interestingly, its prequel has also resurfaced in popularity, climbing up the trending list and landing at the third spot.

As a devoted fan, I must admit my enthusiasm for this latest superhero flick is dampened by the less-than-stellar reception it’s been getting from critics. Rotten Tomatoes, as of now, has only given it a modest approval rating of 25%, based on 63 reviews, which isn’t exactly encouraging. Critics have been pretty blunt about it, labeling the movie as “tedious” and “lacklustre”.

Reviewer from The Daily Beast found that even the less violent sections of this sequel were dull, largely due to a storyline that requires minimal involvement from its main character Charlize Theron and her uninspiring co-actors, leading them to constantly express exhaustion through moping.

This follow-up movie could be the worst film of 2025! It lacks emotion, humor, clear actions, and has almost no script at all.

The New York Times gave it a thumbs up, calling it an engaging adventure that increases tension by expanding its character roster and deepening the universe of the comic book series.

In the sequel, KiKi Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, and Luca Marinelli reprise their roles, with Theron joining them as well. Veronica Ngô returns to portray Quỳnh, Andy’s old friend who seeks revenge in this new installment.

Uma Thurman and Henry Golding are two of the latest additions to the cast, with Thurman taking on the role of Discord, who is known as the world’s initial Immortal.

The Old Guard 2 is streaming now on Netflix.

The latest edition of Digital Spy’s print magazine, titled “Oasis – Live in ’25,” is available for purchase! Grab a copy at your local newsstand or buy it online, now going for only £8.99.
