Netflix’s ’90s-set “gut-punch” drama confirms release date and you won’t want to miss it

While we eagerly anticipate Cillian Murphy’s reappearance in the upcoming “Peaky Blinders” film, fans can catch a glimpse of him in his latest movie, “Steve,” which will premiere on Netflix in October.

Netflix officially announced that the movie titled “Steve” will become available for streaming starting on October 3rd (Friday). After having a limited cinema screening in September, it is now set to be released more broadly on the platform.

The ’90s-era drama is inspired by Max Porter’s acclaimed novel “Shy,” which Richard Osman characterized as a heart-wrenching read, yet with rays of hope peeking through its shadows.

Previously, Murphy had shared that a particular tale had touched his heart deeply, prompting him and his long-time collaborator Alan Moloney, founders of Big Things Films, to transform it into a screenplay for production.

Apart from announcing the release date, Netflix also revealed the initial picture of Murphy from the film. Moreover, they confirmed additional actors such as Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo, and Emily Watson. Notably, these actors are rejoining forces with Murphy following their collaboration in “Small Things Like These“.

In addition to his other responsibilities, Murphy assumes the key position of principal Steve, who on a crucial day, works tirelessly to safeguard his alternative school for troubled students, facing its potential shutdown, all while battling his personal struggles with mental health.

Simultaneously, Shy, a troubled teenager portrayed by Jay Lycurgo, finds himself in a struggle. He’s grappling with his tumultuous past while facing an uncertain future. His internal vulnerability clashes with his inclination towards self-harm and aggression as he strives for harmony within himself.

In this new film adaptation, Porter’s initial tale has been re-envisioned, with the focus shifting from Steve to Shy. It was Porter who proposed this perspective switch, and as Murphy mentioned earlier, the same storyline unfolds, but we experience it from a fresh viewpoint.

Additionally announced for the film today are actors such as Roger Allam, Ruby Ashbourne-Serkis, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Douggie McMeekin, Youssef Kerkour, Luke Ayres, and Joshua J Parker.

Should you be eagerly anticipating the arrival of Steve on Netflix for your Cillian Murphy craving, it’s worth noting that Oppenheimer is scheduled to debut on the streaming platform in the United Kingdom and Ireland next month.

Steve will be released in select cinemas in September and on Netflix on Friday 3 October.
