Even though it hasn’t been renewed for a second season, Ryan Murphy’s series The Watcher is great for a quick binge-watch because of its short length and suspenseful plot. Ryan Murphy is known for creating hit shows like the horror comedy The Beauty and the popular musical series Glee, but he’s also had some misses, such as the widely criticized All’s Fair featuring Kim Kardashian.
A legal drama released in 2025 was widely considered one of the worst TV shows ever. Murphy’s earlier true crime series, Monster: The Ed Gein Story, also received poor reviews when it debuted on Netflix a few weeks prior. However, Murphy had previously created a highly acclaimed and still-popular true crime series for Netflix in 2022.
What Is The Watcher About?

Inspired by real events that happened at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey, The Watcher is a 2022 miniseries based on a 2018 article from The Cut. The show follows Nora and Dean Braddock, played by Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale, as their dream of a perfect New Jersey home turns into a terrifying experience when they begin receiving unsettling letters from a mysterious figure known as The Watcher.
Even at the end of The Watcher, the main villain isn’t revealed. Instead, the couple continues to receive unsettling letters suggesting they’re being watched for mysterious reasons. A major source of Nora and Dean’s fear and trauma is the constant suspicion that anyone in their surroundings could be the person behind it all.
The True Story Behind Netflix’s The Watcher
Despite being a great thriller, The Watcher dramatically changes the true story it’s based on, much like Ryan Murphy’s Monster series. The letters from ‘The Watcher’ and the house itself are real, but most of what happens in the show is made up. The previous owner’s decision not to tell the new family about the stalker is also based on fact.
The true story behind the house at 657 Boulevard is still a disturbing and strange puzzle. Similar to many psychological thrillers, The Watcher increases the suspense with hidden tunnels and a cast of potentially suspicious neighbors who could be the stalker. However, the letters the family actually received were frightening enough on their own.
The Watcher Season 2 Has Been In Limbo For Years
Despite being based on a real-life case, Netflix decided to renew The Watcher for a second season after the show initially did well. However, it was unclear how a second season could have worked. It would have either needed to invent a new story in a different location or essentially retell the same events as season one.
The creators of The Watcher haven’t shared any updates since 2022, and there’s no news about a second season. While it’s possible the show could return eventually, for now, The Watcher appears to be a complete, single-season story on Netflix.
