Despite ending on a cliffhanger that suggests a second season, continuing the series Unfamiliar might be a misstep for Netflix, considering their recent releases in the spy thriller genre. By the end of season one, Unfamiliar had built a compelling and fast-paced espionage story that likely captivated even viewers who weren’t dedicated fans.
Okay, so I just started watching this German spy thriller called Unfamiliar, and it’s really grabbed me. It’s about a couple, Meret and Simon, who have a teenage daughter, Nina, but they’re hiding something big. Turns out, they used to be spies for Germany’s foreign intelligence agency – the BND – way back almost twenty years before the show even begins! It’s a cool setup, and I’m eager to see how their past comes back to haunt them.
Through flashbacks, the story reveals that Simon and Meret attempted to recruit a Russian officer named Josef to work with the BND, using another agent, Katya, to help. But Josef eventually realized they were trying to manipulate him, and things quickly fell apart, especially because Katya was pregnant with his child.
Unfamiliar Season 1 Ends On A Cliffhanger
Okay, so I just finished the first season of Unfamiliar, and it was a wild ride! Basically, this couple is on the run for six episodes because a hitman is after them, sent by a guy named Josef. Turns out Josef’s wife just became Russia’s ambassador to Germany, and he’s terrified that some old secrets – specifically, his past dealings with German intelligence, the BND – are about to be exposed. He’s trying to cover everything up, and this couple is caught in the middle!
This began a thrilling chase, with Simon and Meret trying to escape Josef’s assassin, Jonas, while Josef desperately worked to keep his connections to German spies a secret. But the season 1 finale of Unfamiliar revealed a shocking twist: Josef’s wife and her influential father had been aware of Simon and Meret the entire time.
Someone tried to kill Josef because he was becoming a problem for his wife’s political ambitions, but the series didn’t reveal if he survived. The main plot of Unfamiliar centered on Simon and Meret trying to find the person within the BND who kept revealing their whereabouts to Josef.
The mole turned out to be Ben, the new head of the BND. He used this position to have Simon and Meret arrested at the end of the season, accusing them of Jonas’s murder. Ben tracked them down by exploiting a key discovery from the first season of Unfamiliar: that Nina wasn’t actually their daughter.
I was completely shocked to learn Nina’s true parentage! Turns out, she’s the daughter of Josef’s old flame, Katya, and a BND agent. Katya was led to believe her baby hadn’t lived, and when she found out that was a lie, she betrayed Ben and Meret’s location just to escape the country with her daughter. It’s a crazy twist!
The finale was packed with surprising twists and turns, making it a thrilling conclusion. However, if Unfamiliar was meant to be a complete, one-time story, the ending felt incomplete. The show deliberately left many important questions unresolved, which might encourage a second season, but also left viewers feeling frustrated.
Netflix’s History With Spy Shows Isn’t Good For Unfamiliar Season 2
Netflix’s recent popular spy thriller unfortunately repeats a frustrating ending problem from the series Unfamiliar. The Asset, a surprising hit in 2025, also concluded with many unanswered questions. The final scene showed the main character being shot by someone we don’t see, and another character discovering a large amount of drugs and money, leaving viewers unsatisfied.
Both The Asset and Unfamiliar ended on cliffhangers that really call for another season to wrap things up. Unfortunately, it’s uncertain if either show will get the continuation they deserve to provide a complete and satisfying story.
It’s concerning that Netflix has often canceled spy series before they could finish their stories. Despite positive reviews and strong viewership when it first came out in December 2022, and again with its second season in 2025, The Recruit, starring Noah Centineo, could be at risk.
As a big fan of spy thrillers, I was really hooked by The Recruit, so I was devastated when Netflix canceled it just two months after leaving us on a huge cliffhanger! It felt like so many storylines were just left dangling. And honestly, it makes me worry about other shows like Unfamiliar and The Asset. Even though they’ve done well, there’s no guarantee they’ll get another season now, which is a real shame.
Unfamiliar Season 2 Can Answer Season 1’s Unsolved Mysteries
It’s disappointing that so many plot threads remain unresolved in both The Asset season 2 and a possible second season of Unfamiliar. Just in Unfamiliar, viewers are left with several unanswered questions: Is Josef still alive? Will Meret and Simon face a trial regarding Jonas’s death? Will Ben’s identity as Starfish be revealed? And what became of Katya and Nina?
I get why they’re leaving us with so many questions – it definitely makes me want more, and probably increases the chances of the show getting renewed! But honestly, it’s a bit of a gamble. If Unfamiliar doesn’t get a second season, it’s going to feel really frustrating, like the story just stops without a proper ending. It’ll feel unfinished, and that would be a shame.
