There are a lot of spinoff shows these days, and while some are excellent – like Queen Charlotte on Netflix and Gen V on Prime Video – others just don’t live up to the quality of the original shows or movies they’re based on, such as The Continental and Dune: Prophecy.
The enduring popularity of certain stories is clear when even shows based on spin-offs get made, like George and Mandy’s First Marriage and Andor. The growth of streaming services has only increased this trend, leading to tons of spin-offs for big franchises like The Walking Dead, Yellowstone, and Star Trek, and many more. Even with so many spin-offs already available, there’s still space for another one.
Cobra Kai Just Gets Better And Better Since Ending In 2025
Originally starting on YouTube before moving to Netflix, Cobra Kai is a fantastic example of a successful spinoff series. It perfectly balances respecting the original Karate Kid movies while also forging its own unique path, appealing to both longtime fans and new viewers with a great mix of nostalgia and fresh storytelling. The show maintains a wonderful balance that Mr. Miyagi himself would appreciate, but what’s truly remarkable is how consistently high-quality Cobra Kai has been throughout all six seasons.
The sixth and final season of Cobra Kai aired in February 2025 and was generally well-received by both fans and critics. Since then, the show’s popularity has continued to grow. However, the follow-up movie, Karate Kid: Legends, didn’t perform as well, despite the return of Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso.
The show Cobra Kai demonstrated how successfully it’s built upon the original Karate Kid movies from the 1980s. However, the movie’s decision not to recognize the events of Cobra Kai showed how much fans care about characters like Miguel Diaz and Tory Nichols.
With Karate Kid: Legends, it’s clear that the positive feelings towards Cobra Kai between 2018 and 2025 weren’t simply nostalgia. While Cobra Kai made it seem effortless to continue the Karate Kid story, this new series highlights just how difficult a task it actually was.
Cobra Kai Needs A Spinoff More Than Karate Kid Needs Another Movie
Throughout its six seasons, Cobra Kai sometimes struggled with having too many characters, leading to some important ones being left on the sidelines – particularly in the final season, which concentrated on the show’s main characters. However, this also creates a great opportunity for spinoffs that can explore stories the original series didn’t have time for.
A future spinoff of Cobra Kai could follow new characters like Kenny Payne, Devon Lee, and Anthony LaRusso, building on how the show has already established them as the next generation of rivals and mentors. The final season of Cobra Kai also uncovered hidden details about Mr. Miyagi’s past, which could be explored in a prequel series. Alternatively, a spinoff could introduce a completely new storyline, perhaps centered around Sensei Wolf’s Iron Dragons dojo and its students, who have a lot of potential for further development.
Even if the story ends here, Cobra Kai has already built a lasting reputation that will likely continue to grow. However, if the Karate Kid universe continues, a Cobra Kai spin-off series on Netflix seems like a better path forward than trying to make another unnecessary movie.
