Netflix’s 3-Part Reacher Replacement Series Broke The Rules Of Book-To-Show Adaptations

Netflix has found a new hit series to fill the void left by Reacher, but its journey to the screen was a bit different than most book adaptations. Reacher is widely praised as one of the best action-spy shows currently airing, though it focuses more on thrilling action sequences than complex mysteries.

Despite being based on books, the Reacher series consistently delivers high quality and stays true to the source material, offering a good example of how to adapt a book for television. However, Netflix’s other attempt to fill the gap left by Reacher, The Night Agent, is doing things very differently. In fact, it’s actually breaking a common rule that Reacher still follows when adapting Lee Child’s novels.

By the end of its third season, The Night Agent had broken with a pattern established by Reacher. While Reacher has always adapted stories from books, seasons 2 and 3 of The Night Agent ventured into original territory, creating new storylines. The show’s first season was based on a book of the same name, but Netflix decided to continue the series with its own writers and ideas.

Usually, when a book is turned into a TV show, people focus on how closely the show follows the original story. But with The Night Agent, that’s not really the point – the adaptation takes a lot of liberties.

The Night Agent Actually Improved When Going Beyond The Book

It’s particularly noteworthy that The Night Agent actually got better by moving beyond the plot of the book it’s based on. Usually, TV adaptations suffer when they deviate from the source material. A well-known example of this is Game of Thrones, where the final two seasons were built on just a few notes from the author, George R.R. Martin, of the A Song of Ice and Fire series.

Netflix found success with The Night Agent. The first season, which was adapted from a book, was well-received. While some viewers thought season 2 wasn’t quite as good, season 3 proved to be the strongest. Interestingly, critics actually considered the first season to be the weakest of the series.

The Night Agent Season Rotten Tomatoes Critical Rating
Season 1 75%
Season 2 86%
Season 3 86%

It seems like seasons two and three of the show were noticeably better than the first. Surprisingly, even though the series wasn’t based on any existing story, it actually got better over time. While viewers generally thought season two wasn’t quite as strong, audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes confirm that seasons one and three were well-received. Season one earned a 78% audience approval rating, and season three saw an increase to 82%.

As it turned out, breaking the #1 book-to-show rule worked out for The Night Agent.

The Night Agent Will Only Continue To Break Book-To-Show Rules

The success of The Night Agent continues, with Netflix quickly renewing the show for a fourth season after the release of season 3. Similar to the first two seasons, season 4 won’t be based on a pre-existing book. The writers will continue to develop Peter Sutherland’s story as they see fit, unlike the Reacher production team, which adapts a book series.

Season 4 of Reacher, coming in 2026, will be based on the Jack Reacher novel “Gone Tomorrow.” The show will closely follow the book’s plot, with some changes made for television.

Season 4 of The Night Agent will likely explore new territory. Hints dropped in season 3 suggest the show is moving away from the plot of the original book. Peter Sutherland asked for a partner at the end of the last season, which could mean season 4 will focus on a team of Night Agents instead of just one individual.

The Netflix adaptation deviates significantly from the source material, ignoring a key principle of adapting books for television. This wasn’t what the original author intended.
