Netflix will stream 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup

As a lifelong cinema devotee who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of sports, both on and off the screen, I can’t help but feel exhilarated by this latest development! Netflix’s decision to stream the FIFA Women’s World Cup is not just a game-changer for sports broadcasting, but a significant stride towards equality in sports media.

On Fridays announcement, Netflix revealed they would be streaming the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the very first time, as part of their growing collection of live sports programming.

Netflix holds the exclusive rights to stream both the 2027 and 2031 tournaments in all languages across the U.S. The company intends to broadcast these events simultaneously in English and Spanish, with studio shows and prominent personalities involved. Additionally, Netflix plans to produce documentary content focusing on top players during these tournaments.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement about the 2027 Women’s FIFA World Cup! This grand spectacle will unfold in the vibrant heart of Brazil, from June 24 to July 25. The tournament will see an impressive 32 teams battling it out across 12 cities. However, the financial specifics of the deal remain under wraps for now. But one thing’s for sure, this promises to be a thrilling event that every sports lover should mark on their calendar!

Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria cited the growing global popularity of women’s soccer.

Bringing this renowned competition to Netflix isn’t merely about broadcasting games; it’s about honoring the athletes, their backgrounds, and the enthusiasm that fuels the growing popularity of female sports,” is how Bajaria put it in his statement.

It’s clear from the company’s successful livestream of the boxing match between Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor that there is a huge demand for women’s sports and live events.

Under this three-year contract, the streaming platform secures worldwide permission for airing at least one NFL game on Christmas Day in both 2025 and 2026.

The Serrano-Taylor boxing match drew an average of 74 million viewers who watched it live, making it the most-watched professional women’s sports event ever on U.S. television, according to Netflix. This fight was one of several bouts held during a larger event, where Jake Paul, previously known for his YouTube stardom and now a professional boxer, defeated former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson last month. A whopping 108 million viewers tuned in live for that highly-anticipated fight.

Last year, Netflix took a bold step into streaming live events with a Chris Rock comedy special, and since then, they’ve been consistently expanding this offering. From hot dog eating competitions to Tom Brady’s comedy roast, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and even a tennis exhibition match, they’ve covered quite the spectrum. Next week, I’m thrilled to learn that Netflix will be streaming two NFL Christmas Day games for the first time, further broadening their live event horizon!

Streaming platforms find live sports particularly appealing due to its ability to captivate vast viewerships and ignite the passion of dedicated fans. Meanwhile, organizers of live sporting events are keen on collaborating with streaming services to tap into international audiences as well as a younger demographic.
