Netflix viewers rush to watch binge-worthy thriller Wayward as it’s branded ‘best show in long time’

Mae Martin and Toni Collette’s new show Wayward has quickly become popular with audiences, climbing the rankings on Netflix.

This Canadian show centers around Taskmaster star (and creator of the series) Alex Dempsey, who plays a police officer. He’s investigating an academy for what they call “troubled teens” located in Tall Pines.

Alex teams up with two teenage students, Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind) and Abbie (Sydney Topliffe), to discover the hidden truths about the academy and its principal, Evelyn Wade (Collette).

The acting team also includes Sarah Gadon, playing Laura Redman-Alex’s wife who is expecting a baby and used to attend Tall Pines-and Suits actor Patrick J Adams as Mr. Wyatt Turner, who is the guidance counsellor for Leila and Abbie.

The highly addictive eight-episode series has received rave reviews, with one Instagram fan calling it the “best show in a long time” and sharing that they watched all of it in a single sitting.

“I spent all of Saturday watching Yesterday – it was the best show I’ve seen in a long time!” someone commented on Martin’s Instagram.

“I’m not ashamed to admit that I streamed this whole show in one day,” someone else wrote.

I’m totally hooked! Seriously, amazing work on another incredible show,” another Martin fan shared, and they were talking about his first series, the Feel Good queer dramedy.

Can you believe it? We’re down to the last episode! I’ve actually been watching two at a time just to make the show last longer. Seriously, I don’t want it to end! It’s been one of the best shows I’ve seen in ages, honestly.

The series is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critic rating of 74% out of 34 reviews.

Wayward isn’t flawless, according to reviewers, but the outstanding acting and its fast-paced energy make it a fun watch.

Okay, so Paste magazine reviewed this game, Wayward, and they said that even though the ending was a bit of a letdown – more frustrating than I hoped for, honestly – the amazing acting and how quickly the story moved kept me hooked the whole way through. They basically said the journey was more fun than the ending itself, which, as a gamer, I totally get!

Digital Spy complimented the acting and surprising plot developments in Wayward, but noted that the show tries to cover too much ground within its limited time.

The review describes the film as a uniquely winding thriller that takes unexpected turns, though it occasionally attempts to cover too much ground. Toni Collette delivers her reliably strong performance, but Mae Martin is singled out as the standout performer.

Wayward is streaming on Netflix.
