Netflix to Finally Stream “Steamy” & “Dramatic” Fan Favorite Historical Romance Series

A truly captivating historical romance that’s been gaining a lot of buzz is coming to Netflix. Many consider Outlander to be the gold standard for the genre, and its continuation, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, is currently very popular on STARZ. However, if you enjoy stories set in stunning locations, one of the best, yet often overlooked, period romances focuses on the gorgeous English coastline. Viewers are already hooked, and those about to discover it should get ready for a full binge because Poldark is finally becoming available to US audiences on Netflix.

As a big fan of historical dramas, I’m thrilled to hear that Poldark is coming to Netflix on October 8th! It’s based on the wonderful novels by Winston Graham, and while there was a version made way back in 1975, it’s the 2015 series that really captured everyone’s attention. Debbie Horsfield did an amazing job as showrunner, and the cast is fantastic – Rivals‘ Aidan Turner is perfect as Ross Poldark, and Eleanor Tomlinson is brilliant as Demelza. You’ll also see Jack Farthing, Beatie Edney, Tristan Sturrock, Luke Norris, and Heida Reed among the talented actors.

Following the American Revolutionary War, Ross Poldark comes back to England to start over. He plans a new business, but makes quite a few enemies in the process, and also unexpectedly finds love. Poldark offers all the elements of a classic historical romance, but without the complicated time travel found in Outlander. The show aired for five seasons from 2015 to 2019 and received the BAFTA Audience Award in 2016.

‘Poldark’ Was a Major Hit in 2015

British Broadcasting Corporation

We previously noted that Poldark was very popular in the UK, but its success was truly remarkable. The show sparked conversations everywhere – it was common for people to discuss the latest episodes at work, even during company time! Overall, the series has a fantastic 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and viewers gave it a strong 80% rating. From the very beginning, audiences loved Poldark, describing it as “a fun and steamy romance,” and another viewer called it “dramatic, but not excessive.” Critics agree that the first season is the best, giving it a very high 91% rating. Viewers concur, also rating it 89%. In fact, four out of the five seasons received excellent audience reviews, all scoring around 80%. However, Season 5 remains somewhat controversial among fans, with a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of only 50%. Despite this, critics still enjoyed it, giving it an 86% rating on the Tomatometer.

After gaining fame with Poldark, Aidan Turner is now starring in another provocative series, Disney+’s Rivals. Like Poldark, Rivals is set in the English countryside, but takes place several centuries later. The show features Turner, David Tennant, and Alex Hassell as powerful figures in the 1980s television industry, all vying for success. While Turner’s character, Irish TV star Declan O’Hara, isn’t as overtly sensual as his role in Poldark, the series overall is known for its mature content, and Season 2 (currently being developed) promises to be even more explicit.
