Netflix Summer Movie Preview: All the Movies Coming to Streaming

Spending summer evenings at the cinema was once synonymous with experiencing epic films on the big screen, indulging in colossal tubs of popcorn – a dream concocted by human imagination. For countless individuals, this time-honored custom continues to hold great affection.

Netflix usually maintains the custom of premiering some of its biggest productions annually during summer, allowing you to enjoy a gigantic bucket of popcorn at home. Following suit, 2025 is no exception as they’re set to launch two highly-anticipated sequels – one being Charlize Theron’s return for another thrilling installment of her superhero series The Old Guard, and the long-awaited comeback of Adam Sandler, reprising his role as Happy Gilmore in Happy Gilmore 2 after almost 30 years.

Netflix still has several titles planned for their summer lineup. Among these are Vince Vaughn’s comedy “Nonnas,” a new film in the Fear Street series titled “Prom Queen,” another comedy by Tyler Perry featuring Madea, numerous animated films, one of which is from renowned animator Genndy Tartakovsky, and two separate documentaries – one focusing on Karol G and the other on the Thunderbirds.

This summer of 2025, check out all the Netflix releases we currently know about; remember that there are other unspecified titles in the pipeline, such as a documentary on the Titan submersible disaster and an animated romantic movie called Lost in Starlight. May 23: Fear Street: Prom Queen

The school’s clique of It Girls, known for their blend of kindness and cruelty, are up to their usual power plays in pursuit of supremacy. However, when a brave newcomer challenges their reign, and mysterious disappearances begin to occur among the class of ’88, it promises to be an unforgettable night of terror for this year’s prom.

Welcome back to Shadyside High! In the latest installment of the gory Fear Street series, the excitement of prom is in full swing, and the school’s reigning It Girls are busy scheming their way to the top with their signature mix of sweetness and viciousness. But when a fearless outsider decides to challenge their dominance, and students start mysteriously vanishing, the class of ’88 is heading for one wild prom night they won’t soon forget!

May 23: Air Force Elite: Thunderbirds

June 6: Straw

June 20: KPop Demon Hunters

In their downtime when not filling stadiums with adoring fans, K-pop sensations Rumi, Mira, and Zoey conceal their true selves as fearless demon hunters. These three protect their followers from a constant supernatural danger lurking behind the scenes. Now, they are up against their toughest adversary yet: a formidable boy band of demons masquerading as humans.

July 2: The Old Guard 2

In “The Old Guard 2,” led by Andy (Charlize Theron), a band of immortal fighters return to safeguard the world. However, after Booker’s (Matthias Schoenaerts) betrayal and Quynh’s (Veronica Ngô) escape from her watery prison, Andy faces challenges as she confronts her own mortality amidst a looming danger that could endanger everything she’s fought for throughout millennia. To unravel this mystery, Andy joins forces with Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli), and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor), seeking help from an old acquaintance, Tuah (Henry Golding). July 11: Madea’s Destination Wedding

Brian and his former spouse Debrah are taken aback when they discover their daughter Tiffany is set to marry a rapper she encountered on a yacht, with the wedding taking place in just two weeks. Meanwhile, Madea and her entourage jet off to the Bahamas, causing mayhem and spreading laughter and affection.

July 25: Happy Gilmore 2

August 13: Fixed

Under the direction of creative visionary Genndy Tartakovsky, we have Fixed – an adult animated comedy that follows Bull, a decent, well-rounded dog who unexpectedly learns about his upcoming neutering in the morning. As the reality of this life-changing event sinks in, Bull decides he must embark on one final adventure with his beloved group of friends before this transformation takes place. But what could possibly go awry?

August 28: The Thursday Murder Club

In “The Thursday Murder Club,” a group of four lively retirees named Elizabeth (played by Helen Mirren), Ron (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley), and Joyce (Celia Imrie) engage in an enjoyable pastime of solving cold case murders. However, when a mysterious death happens right outside their doorstep, their casual detective work takes an exciting turn as they find themselves confronted with a genuine murder mystery that requires their skills to unravel. The movie is directed by Chris Columbus and is one of the productions resulting from the partnership between Netflix and Amblin Entertainment.

Orion and the Dark

If the movie narrative of a child maintaining a diary filled with his apprehensions and worries reminds you of Charlie Kaufman’s distinctive style, that’s because Kaufman was instrumental in adapting Netflix’s “Orion and the Dark,” an animated film that, contrary to its initial appearance, is significantly stranger and eerier than Pixar’s Inside Out counterpart. The story revolves around 11-year-old Orion encountering Dark, a tangible representation of his greatest fear, who surprisingly turns out to be more amiable than one might anticipate. This character accompanies Orion on a global journey while introducing him to various aspects of the nighttime such as Sleep, Sweet Dreams, and Mysterious Sounds. Although it’s a tale about conquering fears, it also delves into unlikely friendships, lengthy journeys towards forgiveness, and childhood existential dilemmas we all can relate to.

Hit Man

In Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,” Glen Powell steps into the leading role that perfectly suits him, portraying a college professor who moonlights as a phony hit man. This film is based on a true story, where he dons various disguises and helps local law enforcement apprehend would-be assassins. However, his undercover life is thrown for a loop when he encounters a woman intent on hiring a hitman to take out her abusive husband. Instead of reporting her, he finds himself drawn to her, pretending to be a seductive killer while maintaining their clandestine relationship from the police. The film is filled with humor, suspense, and highlights Powell’s charisma as well as his versatility in playing diverse characters simultaneously.

Rebel Ridge

Movie director Jeremy Saulnier is famous for his gritty crime thrillers filled with violence, but his 2024 film “Rebel Ridge” deviates from this pattern. Instead of focusing on blood and gunshots, the movie creates a palpable tension that gradually intensifies until it explodes. In this story, Aaron Pierre portrays Terry Richmond, a former Marine whose bail money for an imprisoned relative is confiscated by local police during a traffic stop. The Remarkable Life of Ibelin

The Extraordinary Journey of Ibelin is one of the most exceptional documentaries ever produced, undoubtedly the most extraordinary of 2024. Crafted from the blog of Mats Steen, a Norwegian individual who passed away at 24 due to a progressive muscle disorder, alongside recollections from his friends and family, this film weaves together his life, both in actuality and within the online game World of Warcraft, where his character Ibelin Redmoor embarked on quests with companions who knew him solely through the game. Utilizing digital animation mirroring the aesthetics of World of Warcraft’s game engine, the film reconstructs Steen’s life within the virtual gaming world, providing a platform for Steen to experience the romance and thrill that his real-life condition denied him.

Don’t Move

In crafting an authentic original thriller, the film “Don’t Move” turned out to be quite an enjoyable unexpected find. When bereaved mother Iris (portrayed by Kelsey Asbille) is abducted by a serial killer, she manages to break free, but soon discovers that he has injected her with a chemical that gradually paralyzes her. To survive, she must outrun the killer before her body completely shuts down due to the effects of this substance. It’s an intriguing concept that creates a nerve-wracking viewing experience, and, at 92 minutes in length, it never lingers unnecessarily on any scene.

Martha

It’s high time for an exceptional, enlightening documentary on Martha Stewart, and the film titled Martha, directed by R.J. Cutler, does not disappoint. Known for his work on The War Room, The September Issue, and Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, the director brings his expertise to this project, creating a film that is as captivating as it is informative. This comprehensive biography delves into one of the first lifestyle influencers’ complex life story with intrigue and tact. Even if you’re not deeply invested in Martha Stewart (perhaps you’ve only caught a glimpse or two from her cooking variety show with Snoop Dogg), Martha is likely to pique your interest and make you a fan.

Hot Frosty

Absolutely, we’re including the holiday romantic comedy featuring the enchanting hunky snowman who becomes human and finds love with a solitary woman in our top Netflix movies of the year. The storyline might seem outlandish, but “Hot Frosty” manages to be both self-mocking and irresistibly charming. It’s just like that chiseled snowman with a six-pack, if such a thing were possible!

For his newest film, “Carry-On,” Collet-Serra shifts the thrill to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Here, Taron Egerton stars as a determined TSA agent who finds himself ensnared in a terror plot during his first day on the job, with no apparent means of escape. Jason Bateman delivers a chilling performance as the unnamed villain, communicating primarily through an earpiece while both characters chase a dangerous suitcase through a bustling airport on Christmas Eve. It can be described as a “Die Hard”-style story set in the skies, and the kind of high-speed pursuits that Tom Cruise might admire.
