Netflix star reveals secret health battle which was written into hit show
One of the actors from the widely-watched Netflix series, Sirens, is speaking candidly about a personal health struggle they faced while the series was being filmed by Netflix’s cameras.
56-year-old actress Laura Weedman, known for her character Chef Patrice in the drama series, was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy during the summer season.
On Tuesday, I shared my personal health journey with The Huffington Post, discussing the strategies I employed to navigate this challenge within my professional life.
According to Weedman, simply waiting for things to improve wasn’t a viable solution at all.
According to Weedman, she shared her medical circumstances with the show’s creator, Molly Smith Metzler, and director, Quyen Tran, discussing together how best to proceed given the situation.

Mayo Clinic explains Bell’s Palsy as a situation where there’s an unexpected weakness in the facial muscles on one side, giving the impression that half of the face is sagging.
According to the clinic, ‘Smiles are one-sided, and the eye on the affected side is hard to close.’
Although the exact cause isn’t yet apparent, the clinic suggested that experts believe the issue might stem from inflammation and sensitivity affecting the nerve responsible for managing the facial muscles on one side.
Weedman, with over three decades of experience, shared with the publication that she desired to discuss the issue with the creator-showrunner and director before her vacation continued. This way, she could avoid feeling anxious during the rest of the getaway, which the cast was taking between filming episodes.
Previously diagnosed with a mild form of this condition during childbirth of her 15-year-old son, Weedman has shared her experience with it. Her on-screen roles can be seen in shows like Abbott Elementary and Hacks.
Metzler expressed that they couldn’t imagine making the show without Weedman, a talented actor who has appeared on shows like Arrested Development, Euphoria, and Will & Grace.
Metzler remarked, “By then, I too had developed feelings for Lauren similar to those of others. Yet, it grieved me deeply to see her enduring such a difficult situation.
‘We didn’t even wanna conceive of the show without her in it.’

Weedman praised Metzler’s kindness in adapting the script to accommodate her health.
Weedman expressed that it was incredibly challenging for him to believe he made a difference, as his character uttered, ‘Each summer, I face this ordeal; the pressure from this role triggers a return of my Bell’s palsy.’
In addition to its debut on Netflix starting May 22nd, the show’s ensemble features Julianne Moore portraying Michaela Kell, Kevin Bacon taking on Peter Kell, Meghann Fahy in the role of Devon DeWitt, and Milly Alcock as Simone DeWitt.
Completing the ensemble are Glenn Howerton playing Ethan Corbin, Bill Camp portraying Bruce DeWitt, and Felix Solis in the role of Jose.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to share some insights about Bell’s Palsy. It appears that this condition might stem from an immune system response following a viral illness. It’s essential to note that it can affect individuals of any age. So, if you or someone you know experiences facial paralysis symptoms, it could potentially be Bell’s Palsy; however, always consult with a healthcare professional for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
The clinic said that symptoms subsiding varies by the patient.
Generally, improvements are seen in symptoms within just a couple of weeks, and full recovery is expected around the six-month mark, as per the clinic’s report. However, there are a few individuals who may experience lingering Bell’s Palsy symptoms for their entire lives. In extremely rare cases, Bell’s Palsy can occur more than once.
