Netflix shares new Tomb Raider anime teaser and it looks like a globetrotting adventure for the ages

As a seasoned gamer with decades of Lara Croft adventures under my belt, I must say that I am beyond excited for the upcoming Netflix Original, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft! Having grown up with the original games and even shed a tear or two during the emotionally charged Survivor trilogy, this anime adaptation has the potential to bring my beloved character to life like never before.

Among the highly anticipated Netflix Originals this fall is a new anime adaptation of a popular video game series, titled “Tomb Raider: Legend of Lara Croft“. Starting this October, Lara Croft will be front and center in this production. Netflix has just unveiled a thrilling new teaser trailer showcasing action-packed adventures and daring stunts.

In the next installment of Lara Croft, elements from all prior Tomb Raider games will be incorporated, but the narrative primarily revolves around continuing the storyline that began with the 2013 reboot game Tomb Raider, followed by Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

2013 and its successor, “Rise of the Tomb Raider”, were generally well-liked by fans. However, the third installment in the trilogy, known as “The Survivor”, sparked a lot more disagreement among fans. This trilogy, particularly the character development of Lara, remains a topic of ongoing discussion for devoted followers of the series, with some preferring her portrayal in the earlier games.

Discussions about the television and movie versions of Tomb Raider often become quite heated. Angelina Jolie famously played Lara Croft in the initial two official Tomb Raider films, while Alicia Vikander took over for the 2018 reboot. Despite their financial successes, these films received negative reviews from both critics and audiences (though there were many fans who did appreciate them). However, the anime has the potential to outshine all other adaptations.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Hayley Atwell is taking over the character I used to know from Camilla Luddington in the Survivor trilogy video game series. Meanwhile, Earl Baylon, who was the voice behind Jonah Maiava in all three Survivor games, is returning to breathe life into his character once more. You can catch a taste of his performance in the teaser video linked above.

Additional actors joining the cast are Allen Maldonaldo, known for his role in “Heels,” who will lend his voice to tech expert Zip, a character hailing from the “Legend” timeline of “Tomb Raider.” Meanwhile, Zoe Boyle, recognized for her work in “Frontier,” will portray Camille Roth.

Previously, series creator Tasha Huo confirmed that the anime would blend together aspects from various timelines within the Tomb Raider universe.

What is Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft about?

To clarify, this fresh perspective on the series unfolds post the Survivor trilogy, focusing on the continuing journey of our renowned heroine.

Here’s the synopsis shared by Netflix:

Following the events of the Survivor series, Lara Croft has abandoned her friends to embark on increasingly more perilous solo adventures. But she must return home when a dangerous and powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief with an uncanny personal connection. Her daring pursuit will take her on an adventure around the world and to the depths of forgotten tombs, where she will be forced to confront her true self, and decide just what kind of hero she wants to become.

As a thrilled viewer, I can’t help but share the exciting news that the upcoming season is said to have eight episodes, with each episode running approximately between 20 and 25 minutes.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft will premiere exclusively on Netflix on Oct. 10.
