Netflix renews 2 political thrillers for season 3 (and we haven’t even seen season 2 yet)

As a seasoned gamer and avid binge-watcher who’s been through countless series on Netflix, I must say the recent news has me buzzing! The renewal of both “The Night Agent” and “The Diplomat” for season 3 is like striking gold in a digital mine. It’s rare to see shows get renewed before their second seasons even air, but Netflix seems to be going all out this year.

Even though it feels like we’re in the midst of Outer Banks Season 4 weeks, Netflix is showing affection towards a couple of fantastic shows by renewing them for their third seasons!

Moreover, what makes it even more exciting is that we still have yet to watch the second season of these gripping political dramas.

The Diplomat and The Night Agent renewed for season 3

Netflix renews 2 political thrillers for season 3 (and we haven’t even seen season 2 yet)

For this week, Netflix has announced that “The Night Agent” and “The Diplomat” will both be returning for a third season. This news comes as something of a surprise since Netflix usually waits until a show’s previous season has aired on their streaming platform before renewing it for another.

Considering their immense popularity, it’s entirely understandable that The Night Agent is one of Netflix’s most-watched shows ever, even after just one season, and has been crowned as the platform’s most viewed show in 2023. The Diplomat, while not quite as widely watched, has garnered attention as a successful political series with positive critiques.

It looks like we’ll have to be patient for some time before the third seasons of “The Diplomat” and “The Night Agent” debut on Netflix, but good news is that their new seasons will arrive sooner than expected!

The Diplomat season 3 moves production to New York

The Diplomat season 2 premieres on Netflix on Oct. 31.

Before the start of its third season, the first two seasons of “The Diplomat” were shot in the United Kingdom. The shift to New York City is intriguing considering the show’s background, and while it may not necessarily indicate what we suspect, it certainly warrants a second look.

According to Netflix, Debora Cahn, the creator and showrunner of The Diplomat, revealed that:

Season 3 flips the chessboard. Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.

It seems like you’re saying that we’ll likely discover something by October 31st, and in celebration of Halloween, we plan to marathon the entire second season of “The Diplomat”!

The Night Agent season 2 premieres in Winter 2025

It wasn’t really unexpected that The Diplomat received a third season announcement even before Season 2 premiered, given that we had been hearing whispers about its potential renewal for Season 2 for quite some time.

It appears we weren’t anticipating the announcement for The Night Agent season 3, as it’s still a while before the season 2 debut. However, according to a recent statement from Netflix, the second season of The Night Agent is set to air in Winter 2025. This suggests that the new episodes might be available as early as January or February 2025.

The expected release date for “The Night Agent” season 2 has been pushed back a bit from what we initially heard, which was November. Unfortunately, it looks like the premiere is no longer scheduled for that month.

Apart from sharing updates about renewal and release dates, Netflix also disclosed that the production for season 3 of “The Night Agent” is already underway with a tentative start date for filming in Istanbul, Turkey towards the end of 2024. However, production will return to New York City in 2025.

Looking forward, assuming everything runs smoothly, The Night Agent’s second season might premiere as early as 2025, with the third following suit in 2026 (possibly even earlier). The fact that Netflix has already renewed the show so early and set production in motion suggests a relatively quick interval between seasons.

Netflix didn’t just stop at “The Night Agent” and “The Diplomat”; they went ahead and renewed another series as well – “Nobody Wants This”, featuring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, for a second season.

It’s a good day to be a Netflix subscriber; that’s for sure!
