The author who inspired the world of Blade Runner is about to have another one of his stories adapted for television. Philip K. Dick, an American novelist, wrote Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? in 1968, which served as the basis for the Blade Runner movie. Now, Netflix in Latin America is planning to create a live-action series based on another of Dick’s novels.
Netflix is now filming The Future Is Ours, a new series based on a 1956 science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick, The World Jones Made. This marks the first time one of Dick’s stories has been adapted into a Spanish-language TV show. The production features an international team, led by director and writer Mateo Gil, who will also serve as showrunner. Gil previously won an Oscar for his work on The Sea Inside.
What Is Netflix’s The Future Is Ours About?
The Future Is Ours is a short, eight-part series set in 2047, imagining a future where several South American nations have united as FedSur. Facing issues like environmental damage, hunger, and violence, FedSur takes drastic steps to address these problems. The series centers on Jonás Flores, a young preacher who gains a following online, but his arrest by officer Hugo Crussí unexpectedly turns him into a symbol of hope for those struggling with hardship.
Jonás has become a powerful figure, gaining followers by predicting disasters like the collapse of FedSur and the worsening effects of climate change. Crussí is tasked with eliminating him, but the mission is incredibly difficult because Jonás can foresee the future – including his own assassination attempt.
Netflix is excited to adapt the work of Philip K. Dick, recognizing its continued relevance. According to Francisco Ramos, VP of Content for Latin America, this project is a significant undertaking, but they’re proud to showcase Latin America as a center for strength and defiance. It will be a groundbreaking, high-quality production, proving that compelling stories can originate from Latin American countries, told in Spanish.
Isa Dick Hackett, Executive Producer and daughter of Philip K. Dick, expressed her excitement about the first Spanish-language adaptation of her father’s work. She praised Mateo’s adaptation of the novel as both creative and faithful to the source material. Hackett believes Latin America’s vibrant culture and talented artists are the perfect backdrop for such a large-scale project, and she was deeply impressed by the team’s dedication.
The upcoming film, The Future Is Ours, will be directed by Vicente Amorim (known for Senna), Daniel Rezende (The Son of A Thousand Men), and Jesús Braceras (Barrabrava). The cast features Latin American actors including Enzo Vogrincic (Society of the Snow), Emiliano Zurita (No One Saw Us Leave), Delfina Chaves (Máxima), Marleyda Soto (One Hundred Years of Solitude), and Marco Antonio Caponi (Yosi, the Regretful Spy).
