What Is North of North About?
This production titled “The Grizzlies” was developed by Stacey Aglok MacDonald (known as Qanurli) and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril. The show, titled “North of North,” is set in the made-up Arctic town of Ice Cove, Nunavut, which is characterized by a close-knit society where people are well acquainted with each other. The story revolves around a young Inuk woman named Siaja, who takes an extraordinary step to leave her marriage and do so publicly in this tight-knit community. Spanning eight 30-minute episodes, the series charts Siaja’s personal journey within her hometown as she navigates her mother’s hidden truths and the judgment from her neighbors.
In Season 1, Siaja landed a position as an assistant to the town manager, proving herself to be quite competent. She also made efforts to meet new people and found herself developing feelings for Kuuk. The season concluded with her father choosing to reside in Ice Cove permanently, and both Kuuk and his girlfriend Alexis opting to stay there as well. This decision added a layer of complexity to the ongoing storyline.
