Netflix is removing one of its best original movies in March
For individuals who have “Annihilation” saved on their Netflix lists, time is quickly dwindling, as the science fiction thriller is about to disappear from the streaming service.
Based on the novel penned by Jeff VanderMeer, the film premiered initially in theaters across the U.S., Canada, and China, eventually launching globally on a streaming platform on March 12, 2018.
On March 12, 2025, it is scheduled for deletion (or more dramatically put Elimination) from Netflix. This means that March 11 will be the final opportunity for fans to catch a glimpse of it before it vanishes.
In the making and direction of Alex Garland, who brought us “Ex Machina,” the narrative unfolds about a biologist venturing into a secluded zone called the Shimmer, accompanied by an exclusively female crew, following her husband’s solitary return from an earlier venture there. As they delve into this enigma, their exploration leads them to a world teeming with strange, mutating flora and fauna of extraterrestrial origin.
This film showcases an illustrious ensemble of actors, including Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, David Gyasi, Benedict Wong, and Oscar Isaac.
Upon its debut, the film Annihilation garnered widespread acclaim from critics who admired its creative elements, stunning visuals, and suspenseful moments; comparing it favorably to other successful films like The Thing and Alien.
Previously, actor Gyasi expressed his sadness as the movie bypassed UK cinemas and instead premiered on Netflix.
Gyasi shared with Digital Spy that he couldn’t make it to the screening as he was abroad at the time. Consequently, he won’t get the chance to watch it in theaters first, which he expressed his disappointment about, saying, “I’m really bummed out about that.
He stated, “I see why such a film would be released on Netflix instead of theaters. It’s somewhat similar to the case of Beasts of No Nation. As an industry, we are adapting to the trend of people preferring to stay home and watch content.
Annihilation is available to stream on Netflix until March 12.
