Netflix hunting down leaker who shared advance pics and footage from Arcane, Squid Game, more
As a movie enthusiast with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent saga surrounding the “Jace Johnson” leak has been quite intriguing. It’s not every day we witness such audacious acts in the world of streaming entertainment. The cat-and-mouse game between Netflix and this elusive leaker is reminiscent of old spy movies, where the hero always manages to stay one step ahead.
Back in the early days of 2023, an individual, going by the pseudonym Jace Johnson (a name they themselves have acknowledged as false), orchestrated what they boasted as the most disastrous data leak ever to strike the streaming world. This unauthorized exposure included sneak peeks of upcoming Netflix masterpieces such as Arcane, Heartstopper, and Terminator Zero.
They have issued a subpoena in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California to compel Discord (where Johnson had an account) to disclose information about them. The documents accompanying the subpoena refer to a copyrighted, yet-to-be-released image from the second season of Squid Game, Netflix’s top-rated show.
According to Polygon’s report, this situation is different from Netflix filing a lawsuit; at this stage, Netflix may not yet know who they would sue, but they are working on finding out. Johnson had various social media accounts, such as Discord under the username @jacejohns4n, which have either been removed or suspended.
It’s uncertain if Netflix will triumph in its pursuit, but they do have some hints to guide them. We know that the episodes and images were obtained from a California-based localization firm called Iyuno, which also works with Amazon Studios, BBC, Disney, HBO, and DreamWorks. Previously, Johnson admitted that a friend of his worked for iyuno, and he somehow managed to access their database before leaking the shows or movies on 4chan before tweeting about it.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on those tense days at Iyuno headquarters. If they managed to identify Johnson’s confidant within their ranks, that individual would likely have faced consequences. However, if they did, it might have eliminated the need for Netflix to demand information from Discord about the leak source. So, I suspect the mole is still among us, treading lightly to avoid detection.
For several years now, numerous premature releases of upcoming TV series have occurred, mainly due to human mistakes as demonstrated here. Naturally, studios are displeased with this situation, but finding an effective solution to prevent it remains uncertain. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for Netflix in their efforts.
Title for the season 2 premiere of Squid Game revealed (officially)
Netflix unveiled the title for the season 2 premiere of Squid Game as “Bread and the Drawing of Fates”.
When I hear about situations like Squid Game, it reminds me of the ancient Roman tactic called “bread and circuses.” This was a method used to keep the masses content by providing them with food and entertainment, thus preventing them from challenging the corrupt ruling class. In essence, the show portrays individuals who are desperately struggling financially and deeply in debt, risking their lives in dangerous games organized by wealthy elites for their amusement. It’s hard not to see a connection between the two.
“The second installment of ‘Squid Game’ is set to premiere on Netflix on December 26. The final season, which is the third one, will conclude the series next year.
