As a huge movie fan, I was surprised to see that a 2017 action adventure sequel—one that actually did incredibly well in theaters, earning almost a billion dollars—has become Netflix’s most popular movie right now! It’s cool to see older films find a new audience on streaming, but this one really took off, hitting the top spot in just two days. It just proves there’s still a lot of love for this franchise.
Released on December 20, 2017, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continues the story from the 1995 film starring Robin Williams. The new movie features Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan in a fresh adventure. With a production cost of $90 million, the film was a huge box office success, earning over $962.5 million worldwide.
Featuring Nick Jonas, Rhys Darby, and Bobby Cannavale, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a sequel set over 20 years after the original film. It follows four teenagers who discover an old video game and are pulled inside, transforming into their adult game avatars. Trapped in the dangerous world of Jumanji, they must overcome challenging jungles, deadly traps, and a villainous enemy, all while learning to cooperate to survive and find a way back to the real world.
‘Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle’ Has Once Again Become a Hit on Netflix
Since being added to Netflix on April 5th, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has quickly become a viewer favorite. According to Flix Patrol, it’s now the most popular movie in the U.S., surpassing titles like Anaconda, Black and Blue, and the recent documentary The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson.
Unfortunately, you can’t currently stream the fourth Jumanji movie (Jumanji: The Next Level, which brought back Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Nick Jonas). If you enjoy Welcome to the Jungle and want to continue the series, you’ll need to rent or buy it digitally.
‘Jumanji’ Will Return on Christmas Day 2026

The 2019 film Jumanji: The Next Level was a huge commercial success, earning $801 million globally. While it cost more to make than the previous film, Welcome to the Jungle, it was still profitable, making it a clear choice to start working on another Jumanji movie.
After a long wait, the popular movie series is back this year with a final film, marking the end of a story that started over 30 years ago. Directed by Jake Kasdan, filming wrapped up on March 30th. Originally planned for a December 11th release, the movie was moved to December 25th to avoid competing with the releases of Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, both scheduled for December 18th.
